Life & Work with Matt Philie of Winter Garden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Philie

Hi Matt, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started creating videos on YouTube when I was just 11 years old, diving into the platform before most people even considered it a career path. By 14, I became one of the first 3,000 creators to join the YouTube Partner Program, monetizing my content at a time when the digital creator economy was still in its infancy.

Over the years, I’ve created thousands of videos and collaborated with more than 300 brands, including some of the biggest names in the world—Universal Studios, LG, Logitech, Panasonic, Intel, and more. My tech channel, swashin, took off quickly, hitting 100,000 subscribers within its first year and amassing over 35 million views in a few short years. That success opened doors for me to consult other YouTubers, helping them grow their channels and achieve massive reach. Collectively, I’ve been responsible for generating hundreds of millions of views across multiple creators and brands.

Now, I work on anything and everything digital, with a strong emphasis on YouTube and social media strategy. Whether it’s content creation, brand growth, or digital consulting, my focus is on helping creators and businesses maximize their online presence and turn their ideas into impactful, high-performing content.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been anything but smooth—it’s been a constant grind. I’ve run multiple YouTube channels, spent months creating content that barely got any views, and pushed through periods where growth felt impossible. But that persistence led to some incredible highs—like a month where I hit 6 million views, landing massive brand deals, and collaborating with some of the biggest creators in the space.

That kind of momentum is exciting, but burnout is real. Even when everything was going well on the outside, I had to take a step back for my mental health. Over time, I realized I didn’t have the same passion for my tech channel that I did when I was a teenager. Now, my focus has shifted—I’m more passionate about helping others grow, using everything I’ve learned to guide creators and brands to success in the digital space.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m best known for two things: Pimp My Setup—a show where I reviewed viewer-submitted desk setups and gave feedback—and my Shudio series, where I transformed a shed into a fully functional studio. Pimp My Setup ran for over 300 live-streamed episodes and was one of the first shows to focus entirely on desk setups. Meanwhile, the Shudio series became a spectacle of its own, inspiring countless creators to think outside the box when designing their own spaces.

What sets me apart is that I was the first YouTuber to truly create the “setup” niche. People cared about setups, but no one was talking about them in a structured, entertaining way—I changed that. I built the first dedicated show, and now there are countless versions of it across the platform. I also pushed the boundaries of creative workspaces, with my shed-turned-studio inspiring more creators to reimagine their own environments.

I’m most proud of the impact I’ve had on the community. Seeing how many people have been influenced by my content—whether it’s creating their dream setup or launching their own setup-focused channels—proves that taking risks and innovating early can shape an entire niche.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The most important quality behind my success is persistence. I’ve always believed that success isn’t about overnight wins—it’s about showing up every day, putting in the work, and pushing forward even when results aren’t immediate. I’ve spent years creating content, refining my skills, and adapting to an ever-changing digital landscape. There were times when growth felt painfully slow, but I never let that stop me.

What sets me apart is my ability to stay ahead of trends while remaining consistent. I don’t just wait for opportunities—I create them. Whether it was pioneering the setup niche on YouTube, turning a shed into a full-fledged studio, or helping other creators grow, everything I’ve built has come from a mix of hard work, patience, and a willingness to keep going long after most people would have quit.
