Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra & Kristina Molinary.
Hi Mayra & Kristina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My mother is the reason I started it all, since I was little I remember her baking and decorating cakes. I have a vivid memory of her decorating a giant red Elmo. Back then the decorating styles were different and you decorated the entire cake “en estrellitas”. Now we do flat frostings and add our decorations on top of that layer. Styles are always changing and I can’t wait to see how cake decorating continues to grow.
My mother, Mayra is a teacher and started taking baking classes in Puerto Rico to start a new hobby. That is where her passion and knowledge base comes from. Her crafting knowledge comes from a high-school friend Carmen from Puerto Rico. They to this day get together and teach each other new things. They are still always helping and learning from each other via FaceTime.
I, Kristina, have a full time job but just as my mom have a passion for baking and crafting. I have been baking for my brothers ever since I can remember. It mainly started as mixing premade cookie dough, with cake mixes to make weird concoctions. To now making cakes all from scratch.
We got to where we currently are in March of 2020. That is when we picked a name, a logo, and started Instagram. This is when we decided to start posting all of our creations. Before then we would get orders mostly from family and close friends.
It’s crazy to think about how we went from just family and friends to now making orders for people we have never met. I cannot wait to see just how much further we can go.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, nothing worth in life ever is but that is what makes it all worth it.
I would say an obstacle we have been experiencing is everything going up in price at the grocery stores. With the cost of ingredients going up, the prices for our items have had to also increase. The limit of things you can get at the grocery store is also a struggle. For example cream cheese you can only buy 2 and lately, the ones they have had in stock are fat-free.
The way we have gotten around this is we started to bulk shop at Costco.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in desserts but do love crafting and combining the two. You can combine the two by baking cakes and making custom cake toppers for each one. We are mainly known for cakes and cake pops. Our most popular flavors are Puerto Rican cake called “bizcocho mojadito”, lemon, and red velvet.
What matters most to you? Why?
Being a mother and daughter business family is what matters to us most. Family is how we started out and family is our biggest supporter. Without my mom and her inspiration, we would not have gotten this far.
