Life & Work with Monica Collazo of Orlando/Central Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Collazo.

Hi Monica , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Absolutely! My journey in the beauty industry really began back in 2018 when I made the bold decision to leave my full-time job and enroll in cosmetology school. I had always loved makeup, it was something that lit me up inside and I finally felt the calling was getting louder and clearer. By 2019, I had officially earned my cosmetology license, and I’ve now been licensed for six years.

I spent about a year and a half working at Ulta, where I got hands-on experience with makeup. It helped me build confidence, but deep down I knew I was meant for something more personal and purpose-driven. In early 2024, I began working at a location where they offered both hair and makeup services. But as I grew in my artistry and saw the impact I was having on clients, I realized I didn’t need to work under someone else to fulfill my calling. I knew I could step out on my own, using my full potential, my ambition, and my faith.

In December of 2024, something powerful happened. A woman at church, someone who didn’t even know me or my plans, walked up to me and said, “Whatever it is you’re thinking about doing, jump in with both feet.” That moment was confirmation. I took the leap shortly after, and here I am, living in my purpose, serving women through beauty that uplifts and transforms.

I’m so grateful for how far I’ve come and for the support and growth I’ve experienced this year alone. From building community through my work, to turning my suite into a space that feels like ministry, it’s been an incredible journey. I truly believe that when you move in purpose and faith, doors open that you never imagined.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but I truly believe the challenges are part of the growth. This business actually pulled me out of a dark place and gave me something to pour my heart into. Even with the ups and downs, I wouldn’t change the journey. When you’re doing everything on your own, there’s a lot of learning involved. And unfortunately, some of that learning comes from falling short or making mistakes. There have been moments where I’ve questioned myself, especially during slow seasons. Those quiet weeks can be scary when the bills are still due, and you’re trying to keep the momentum going.

And starting fresh in this new chapter of being fully on my own has felt like starting from the very bottom. But I know it’s only up from here. I’ve learned to lean into faith during the hard times and remind myself that if I’m doing the work I was placed here to do, then things will work out, even if I don’t see it right away.

There have been moments of burnout, imposter syndrome, comparison, and even doubt especially when you’re putting in so much effort and things don’t take off right away. But every obstacle has stretched me and built my character. I’ve learned how to pivot, how to create in slow seasons, and how to keep going even when it’s hard. It’s not easy being the artist, the marketer, the scheduler, the content creator, all at once but it’s worth it. And it’s made me not just a better artist, but a stronger, more faith-filled woman.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a hair and makeup artist and the owner of Beauty by Monica. I specialize in soft glam and full glam. Yes, we love both over here! Whether it’s a natural glow or a dramatic beat, my goal is always to enhance, never mask. I want every woman who sits in my chair to feel like the most beautiful version of herself.

I keep my focus on artistry that transforms in the moment. While makeup is my main niche, I also offer hair styling for events, photoshoots, and bridal moments. I love combining both services to give my clients a complete look. It’s like creating art with intention from start to finish.

What sets me apart is the energy I bring into the room. I’m a big believer in creating a peaceful, uplifting experience. I’m a “girls’ girl” through and through, and I truly want everyone to feel special, seen, and supported. This business pulled me out of a dark place, and now it’s my way of pouring love and light back into others. My faith is the foundation of what I do. I want to love others the way Jesus has loved me, and I hope that shows through every interaction.

What I’m most proud of is the journey itself. Watching how quickly I’ve grown, not just as an artist, but as Monica, and as Beauty by Monica, has been humbling and surreal. I’m still just getting started, but I know I’m walking in my purpose, and I’m grateful every day that people choose me to be part of their most special moments.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
For me, it’s never been about luck, it’s always been God. I truly believe the words we speak over our lives are powerful, and I’ve learned that I’m not the one in control. There’s someone greater who has a purpose for each of us, and once I built a real relationship with Him, my entire life began to shift.

I didn’t get here by chance. I worked hard, I made sacrifices, I let go of people, habits, and environments that no longer aligned with where I was going. And I also had to hold myself accountable. Those “bad luck” moments weren’t unlucky, they were often the result of choices I made. But even in that, God was working things together for my good.

Now I’m living in alignment with my purpose. Serving women through beauty, and creating a space that reflects love, peace, and transformation. This isn’t luck. I deserve to be here because I trusted the calling, put in the work, and never gave up on what was placed on my heart. And I’m grateful I get to walk this out every day.
