Hi Nina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From Engineer to Tattoo Artist: My Journey of Reinvention

Hi, I’m Nina, a tattoo artist with a story that proves it’s never too late to follow your heart and build the life you’ve always dreamed of.

I’m originally from Belarus, a small country in Eastern Europe. The United States is the fourth country I’ve called home. Before moving here a year and a half ago, I lived in Belarus, Ukraine, and Latvia. Growing up, I took the traditional route: attending university, earning a degree, and pursuing a stable career. I became a chemical engineer, working for years on large-scale projects in construction.

But beneath the surface, I was always a creative person. I loved photography and drawing, though I never pursued them professionally. Coming from a small town, opportunities for artistic development were limited. Moreover, the idea of building a career in a creative field felt unrealistic. For years, art was just a hobby—something I enjoyed but never imagined could become my life’s work.

That changed when I moved to Ukraine. For the first time, I saw tattoos as an art form. I met people with intricate, breathtaking designs—sleeves and large pieces that told unique, personal stories. Before that, my exposure to tattoos was limited to simpler designs that didn’t leave much of an impression. But these works were different; they were powerful, evocative, and inspiring. I began dreaming of getting my own tattoo and became fascinated by the idea of tattooing as a form of self-expression.

Then, life took an unexpected turn. The war in Ukraine forced me to leave the country and move to Latvia. A year later, I made the difficult decision to start over in the United States. Moving was a challenge—finding a job, learning English, and building a life from scratch occupied my every thought. For a time, my creative dreams were pushed to the background.

But as time passed, the idea of tattooing kept resurfacing. I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I began researching how to turn this dream into a reality and found a tattoo academy in Florida. Enrolling there was a pivotal moment. I worked during the week and studied tattooing on weekends. Practicing on friends, volunteers, and clients who visited the school, I discovered how much I loved this work. Tattooing combined creativity, skill, and a personal connection with people in a way that felt completely natural to me.

Finding My Path in the Tattoo Industry

After graduating from the academy, I faced the next challenge: breaking into the industry. Studios often prioritize experienced artists, and as a newcomer, I lacked a robust portfolio. Adding to the complexity, I was a foreigner navigating a new culture and language. I reached out to several studios, sending messages and hoping for a reply. Many went unanswered, and others fizzled out after brief exchanges. It was discouraging, but I knew persistence was key.

In the meantime, I practiced tirelessly, often returning to the academy to work with clients during evenings and weekends. Each session helped me refine my skills and build confidence.

Then, life threw me an unexpected curveball. The day job I relied on for income suddenly disappeared when the business I worked for closed. At first, I felt panicked, but deep down, I saw it as a sign. I had been hesitant to fully commit to tattooing, thinking I needed more time to prepare. This moment forced me to take the leap.

Encouraged by friends, mentors, and clients who believed in my potential, I renewed my efforts. Within a single day, I found a position at a studio that welcomed me with open arms. The experience was transformative. I worked alongside talented artists who helped me grow, and each challenge reaffirmed that I was on the right path.

Thriving as an Artist

After some time at my first studio, I decided to venture out on my own. It was the right choice. Today, I’m thriving as a tattoo artist, with clients booking weeks in advance. I’ve met incredible people along the way—fellow artists who’ve become friends and mentors, generously sharing their knowledge and techniques.

My passion lies in fine-line tattoos and blackwork, and I’m committed to mastering these styles. I believe the tattoo industry is evolving, and in the years ahead, people will increasingly value artistry and quality over trends or price. While styles may come and go, the fundamentals—creativity, precision, and responsibility—will always matter.

For me, tattooing is more than art; it’s about trust. As tattoo artists, we guide our clients through every step, from initial consultation to aftercare. And yes, aftercare is crucial! Clients play a significant role in ensuring their tattoos heal beautifully, and I see it as my responsibility to educate them on how to care for their new artwork.

A Message for Dreamers

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that it’s never too late to start over. Life is unpredictable—wars, moves, and heartbreaks will happen—but they don’t have to derail your dreams.

I started my journey as a tattoo artist at 35, and I’m living proof that reinvention is possible at any stage of life. So, if you’ve been holding back on pursuing something you’re passionate about, don’t wait. Take the first step today. You never know where it might lead.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting over from scratch in a new country is always a challenge. But in the U.S., the challenge was twofold: not only was I rebuilding my life in a completely new environment, but I was also pursuing an entirely new career. To make this dream a reality, I had to take on various jobs just to earn enough money to support it, as it required significant resources.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way is the importance of balancing trust and caution when dealing with people. It’s about being resilient and strong on the inside while remaining approachable and kind on the outside—like a peach, soft on the outside but with a firm core. This balance has been essential in navigating this journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a tattoo artist, I dedicate my full attention to my clients while staying deeply focused on my work. This means that while I engage with clients and enjoy our conversations, there are moments when I grow quiet as I concentrate on the process. My full immersion in the art allows me to create my best work.

Many of my clients find the experience so relaxing that they often describe it as ‘tattoo therapy.’ Some even come close to falling asleep—or actually do! I take it as a compliment because it means they trust me and feel completely at ease. They leave not only with a tattoo they’re proud of but also with a positive and calming experience.

The nature of each session depends on the project. It might be a small, quick piece, an all-day session, or a design that requires multiple appointments. Regardless of the scope, I always prioritise clear communication and client comfort. I encourage my clients to reach out with any questions, whether they need clarification, a touch-up, or adjustments to their tattoo. I stand by my work, and any follow-ups or corrections are always free of charge. My goal is to ensure every client feels supported and leaves satisfied, knowing they’ve received both quality art and exceptional care

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, tattoos will continue to grow in popularity. Clients will place increasing importance on both the technical execution and the artistic quality of their tattoos. They will also become more meticulous in choosing their tattoo artists, prioritising skill, style, and professionalism.

As a result, competition among tattoo artists will intensify, and the overall level of expertise in the industry will rise. This progression will help filter out substandard services, reducing the risk of issues like scarring, infections, or poorly executed tattoos that require cover-ups or removal.

This shift toward higher standards benefits everyone: clients will feel more confident in their choices, and the industry will become a space where quality and artistry are paramount.
