Life & Work with Patty Mangual

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Mangual.

Hi Patty, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Looking back on my career, I recall how grateful I am to have had film as my outlet to save life’s precious moments. I’m grateful to my mother every day for gifting me a polaroid camera when I was a little girl, so I’d be able to document my baby brother’s arrival home from the hospital.

From that day on, my heart was forever tied to photography and my little brother Patrick, of course. Knowing that photography was my passion I began my A.S degree at the Southeast Center of Photographic Studies. When I graduated in 2015, I was able to begin work right away first with a ballet/dance photographer and then as a photo retoucher for a studio in my hometown. I found both roles to be unique and challenging, pushing me to become better in my trade.

By 2017, I began taking part in wedding photography. Being able to spend my days, and more than a few late nights capturing heartfelt and loving moments brought my work even closer to my heart. My work brings me the same joy today as it did when I was a child. My brother can tell you for certain that I’m a much better photographer today than when we were children.

But I know I’m capturing the same tears and smiles for them as I did for my mother the day she brought Patrick home.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve been very blessed in my career.

They say you’ve found your destiny when the right things fall in place at the right time. This was certainly the case for me. When I began the journey toward wedding photography, I wasn’t sure what I would be getting into or how well it would turn out. Fortunately for me, it was a smooth journey that I’m still grateful for.

I will be forever grateful to all the amazing photographers I’ve worked with who took the time to teach me so many new things as I made my way forward.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Deep down, I am a Portrait Photographer. The mix of portraiture and candid moments really drives me to seek out the spirit of the moment we are trying to capture. Really for that reason, I would have to say that I specialize in people.

I love to photograph people during weddings, parties, lifestyle sessions. I think if you asked those I’ve worked with over the years, they would say I have a knack for attention to the little details of the moment. I think wedding days, in particular, are when those little details can count the most for all involved. I know it’s always special to me.

Photography is something I’ve fallen in love with. I can’t say for certain if that sets me apart from all others, but I can say for certain that it sets photography apart from everything else, for me.

What’s next?
I think the last few years have been particularly hard for all of us.

I know many of those hard moments have helped me grow as a person and as a creative. If anything, it has pushed me to try new things and work harder to grow my own business and professional relationships. In the coming year, I’m planning to add some European shoots to my portfolio as well as an experiment in Branding Photography.

There are a lot of beautiful things happing in the world and I’m going to do my best to capture as many of them as I can.
