Life & Work with Rob Herbert of Downtown Orlando, Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Herbert.

Rob Herbert

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started as a musician in high school drum line, and then started playing in rock bands in college. That led to a lot of freelance live and studio performing, and an opportunity to move to Orlando in 2005. I was amazed at the talent and community here. Connecting with great people in the local music scene became an obsession, and I started playing with a lot of local bands. I then started building my own bands of several different styles, which over time became the roster of Backbeat Entertainment. I was getting calls for jazz, which led to “Breezeway Trio,” and requests for Country music became our band “The Experience.” Our flagship group is “Backbeat Band” and our newest custom show is “Acrylic Beats” featuring live art, live music, and an awesome DJ. Today we have a roster of over a dozen acts based in Florida, Las Vegas, California and beyond. Now in 2025 we are proud to book Entertainment acts and production across the US and internationally.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a long a winding road for sure! But mostly smooth, as we have gradually built our team of performers and a family of amazing clients who rely on us for Entertainment. I will say that 2020 and Covid hit us hard…we canceled so many events around the world and did our best to keep our teams working. It was a dark time with very little business… but thankfully everyone came out on the back side ready to gather and listen to live music again!

One of the best things about the Orlando events community is that it is more collaborative than competitive. A lot of the best companies and bands who do things at a high level are quick to help each other, which is not the same as some other cities. I got involved as a board member with ILEA (Int’l Live Event Association), which is a terrific group of event professionals who collaborate and support each other. That’s been a terrific organization for navigating challenges and growth whenever there were bumps in the road.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our mission statement is: “We do cool stuff, in cool places, with cool people – for great causes”. It can be stressful planning any event, and I think having an easy going approach, being communicative and professional allows us to build a friendly relationship with our clients.

We are proud to support a large number of nonprofit charities in the Orlando area, including Give Kids the World, UCP, Give Hope Foundation, Crohns & Colitis Foundation, and others. These events are incredibly rewarding to give back to those in need.

We also work with amazing companies for their event Entertainment and production, such as SpaceX, Florida Citrus Sports, and the PGA tour.

A really proud moment happened this year, when Backbeat Entertainment was awarded “2025 Best Entertainment” for our custom show entitled “Acrylic Beats.” This was designed for a special event in Austin, TX, but has quickly become our most-requested act. (https://www.backbeatent.com/acrylic-beats)

What matters most to you? Why?
It’s all about creating unique experiences, and giving back. How can we not only help fulfill the need that was requested, but also bring more value? As mentioned, we work with lots of local organizations who do the most amazing work, raising funds for children, various medical conditions, veterans and more.

Whether it’s a company thanking their teams for a successful year, or a fund raiser pursuing a new goal, we want to help achieve that vision.
