Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott & Morgan.
Hi Scott & Morgan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
During the pandemic around Sept 2020, Scott and I were bored and ready to take on a new challenge. I (Morgan) had recently been laid off from my job and wanted to find a way to bring in income. We’ve always been big Disney fans but never could find any Disney merch that we liked. Everything either has big characters on it or just wasn’t our style. We started creating designs that were more alternative and subtle. The first couple of designs we only printed for our friends and family, but very quickly, we were getting more requests, and we decided to open up an Etsy shop and see if we could sell anything. We invested our money and got stocked with an inventory of different designs, and we were so excited to start fulfilling orders…but it was crickets. We’d get one or two orders here and there, but it was a really slow start. There were many times that we wanted to call it quits, but we figured that we already invested money; let’s just see if we can sell the items we have. During this first year, we would do different sales for donations. We worked with local families and charities to create shirts to sell, and all profits would go to them. It was a great way to help the community and market our company. We kept utilizing social media and trying to get our name out there. Over time, we slowly gained a following, and after about a year of slowly growing, we were starting to break even. In August of 2021, we planned a trip to Disney, and we were going to release a new Halloween design while we were in the park. It was the anniversary of the Disney ride The Haunted Mansion, and our design was inspired by that ride. When we release the design on Etsy, we didn’t think much of it; most of our designs never sold out right away. We released the design and then enjoyed our day at Disney Park, and when we got back to the hotel, Everything Sold out! We gained thousands of followers, and we were rapidly growing. It was exciting and overwhelming. Over the last year, we have continued to grow and continue work with different charities to raise money whenever we can. We’ve loved building this Disney community online, and we are always looking for ways to help our other small businesses.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There are always struggles with running a small business. Designs we think will be amazing but never sell. Social media can be a toxic place, and a lot of hate, but it’s 100% how we market our business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are a husband-and-wife duo who love everything Disney. We initially started creating shirts and hoodies for ourselves and close friends. We wanted Disney clothes that fit our style which is more subtle and alternative. Our style is unique and not like any other brand.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Anyone can be an entrepreneur, but I think for long-term growth and success, it takes a level of drive and perseverance. You are not going to succeed at first, and most small businesses will stop after the first failure. To be a successful entrepreneur, you must welcome failure and improve from it. You must be ready to fail hundreds of times to get one small success
