Life & Work with Sonia Hernandez of Kissimmee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonia Hernandez.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
Hozanna Ballet Academy is committed to forming lives through dance to impact the new generations. Hozanna Ballet is a fulfilled dream. A dream that God placed in my heart from an early age. Upon moving to the U.S.A, I met the Lord Jesus Christ in such a way that He made me dream again and believe that anything was possible by His side. Sometimes we may think dreams don’t come true, perhaps because they don’t manifest in our time but manifest in God’s perfect time.

This dream was born from a conversation I had with the pastor of my church. I mentioned that I was a ballet instructor in my home country, Colombia, which was the door God opened to a new opportunity in this country. Opportunity for which I am very grateful. When I look back, it astonishes me that a Hispanic woman could fulfill her dream in a foreign country; this shows me that nothing is impossible for God. It’s been 11 years since I opened the academy, and we continue to strive toward forming strong and confident leaders for the future. As our slogan says: “Forming lives through dance.” I want to be a grain of sand that helps transform the lives of our students.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road but a journey with many obstacles. There were many times when I thought I would give up, but my passion and love for what I do keep me going. The emotional and financial help from my mom and my best friend allowed me to continue on this path. Their support helped consolidate my dream, and little by little, the business grew to achieve its financial independence. At the same time, we also build credibility and trust in our clients by providing quality service in a family and Christ center environment.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
Something we prided ourselves on is that we are not a conventional dance studio. Traditional dance studios center on dance competitions, focusing their attention on the most skillful students. At Hozanna Ballet, we have a holistic approach to dance; everyone can learn dance despite their physical limitations. Dance is our vehicle to reach this generation and improve their focus and mental strength to form confident and strong children and adolescents. It all starts by planting a seed of greatness in their hearts.

What quality or characteristic is most important to your success?
Many qualities played an essential role in achieving my dream. First, discipline was and continues to be the backbone of fulfilling my goals. Discipline allows me to stay consistent despite challenges that arise. One must remain consistent with timelines and essential tasks to see positive results. Faith also plays a crucial part in my success; faith is the certainty that I will see what I wait for. Faith was the force that kept me moving forward, even when my eyes didn’t see what I hoped for.
