Life & Work with Steven Petry of Melbourne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Petry.

Hi Steven, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The company was originally called Dependable Deliveries, founded in 2007. We then re-branded in 2023 as “Green Team Logistics” to better encompass our passion for the environment, and saving customers money. So with our rebrand came the use of our tote program, as well as tote bags, perforated cardboard, wardrobe racks, and other “green” reusable items. Our tote program is sort of our Magnus Opus, and gives our customers a faster, more efficient way to pack. This is because of the ease of the totes. Hinged lids provide a quick “Load and Close” method. You no longer have to put cardboard boxes together, waste tape, and write with sharpie. Our system includes ID cards, color coordinated, labeled and fit perfectly into an ID slot built into the tote. This way our movers no exactly where to put all of your belongings once in the new house. The bags offer a nice alternative to wasting garbage bags, or more cardboard boxes. Perfect for linens, and lighter items. All of this is included into our all-encompassed hourly pricing, we simply take a deposit on the totes, which is then refunded the moment they are returned. This also includes free packing material. Overall, our system is faster, safer, and overall more efficient, which saves our customers time, which in turn saves them money.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was very difficult marketing something that was relatively unknown. We were essentially challenging an industry standard that’s been the same since it’s inception. Customers and employees were constantly saying “Why not just use boxes”. So it took awhile to make people understand the logic of what we are doing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As someone with a Marketing and digital creation background, it was fun to make this business pop, being this eyesore of an underdog. We have these massive green monsters on the sides of our trucks, and even though we’re Green Team, we wear bright purple shirts. I think what sets us apart, aside from the obvious tote program, is our transparency and honesty with customers. We will typically spend over an hour with our customers on an estimate, just getting to know them and hanging out. What we’re most proud of, is the ability to challenge the status quo, and shake up the industry. Offering an alternative to the norm, that is beneficial to not only the environment, but to our customers wallets as well.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Well I think you have to be a risk-taker to own any sort of business, to some degree. I think the biggest risk was purchasing and implementing something that that didn’t really exist before. The constant anxiety of “did we just waste a bunch of money on something that nobody wants”. But I think that without risk, we just live in a state of contentment, which is great, but without challenge, you don’t grow. I think the necessity of risk, far outweighs the fear, as long as you’re willing to challenge it.
