Life & Work with Taylor Morrison of Downtown Sanford Adjacent

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Morrison.

Taylor Morrison

Hi Taylor, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a mega pop culture nerd who was studying communications in Lakeland. I was given an iPad to watch TV in my small dorm room, and something compelled me to download a drawing app. I fell in love with the medium in 2016 and haven’t stopped since. At first, I mostly drew my favorite music artists and posted them to social media. After 3 years of consistently making art for social media, April Hawkins (fellow Sanford artist) invited me to a bingo night she hosted to sell my art for the first time. I only had enough to bring one milk crate of pieces in frames that night. I now have a display that consists of a tent, three tables, and giant bins! I consistently attend local community food truck events in the Sanford area, among others! I also submit to the themes of the local art shows put on by Hourglass Brewing (in Longwood) and Deviant Wolfe Brewing. I’ve got great family support, and the operation grows yearly!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I had a year and some of vending under my belt, and I was starting to get the hang of the rhythm of vending. Then, I broke my hip in a skateboarding accident and had to flush my separate account for art ventures financially. I was out of work for 3 months as well. Thank you to my dad for putting up my entire setup when I was on crutches. As my events were paid for at the time, it was my only avenue to make money. That was in May of 2022. And I’m proud to say I’m back to building the account again.

Thanks for sharing that. So, tell us more about your work next.
I work in the back of the house at an unnamed corporate restaurant. My first service job was at a local bar, The West End Trading Company; I was introduced to the food aspect of service here and developed a reputation in the community for good bar food. I was subsequently offered the job through a recruitment effort because of said reputation! I work at the Fry/Salad station. I primarily work Salad at the height of the service due to my speed and instantaneous quality control. I joke that I was a salad specialist before I became an artist. What sets me apart is that I do the whole job and sometimes some other’ work. It’s why I’ve garnered multiple raises in 2 years. I’m a real “stay ready, don’t get ready” type of guy when it comes to prepping. I’m incredibly consistent.

What makes you happy?
My dog. My family. The media I love. When I step back, it’s wild to me that some of these media pieces are almost like family! None of this would be possible without the support of my family; I love them so much! Luna, you can’t read this. You know, dog and all, but you’re my best bud in the whole world. Making art and explaining it to someone who wants to hear about it is pure joy for me!
