Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrell Middlebrooks.
Terrell, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name Terrell Middlebrooks I grew up in Queens, New York I’m 32 currently moved to Orlando in August 2015 been a ride ever since! I started tattooing at 17. I was introduced to tattoos through my dad. I remember vividly him and his friends coming home from getting tattooed. And back then, tattooing was illegal in New York and they had some real off-the-wall images on them. Fast forward 12 to 13 years later, and the same guy who tattooed my dad opens a shop not too far from my house. I had just graduated high school, and my mom was telling me to get a job, so I walked in and got rejected the first time and kept going back (never mentioning he tattooed my dad) until I got in. It’s been a roller coaster ever since.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For myself, There are constant struggles with being an entrepreneur and add artist to that, and it gets even more complex. I like to consider life a roller coaster, and I got my arms and legs outside the ride enjoying it. I mean I’ve like to say I been granted a lot of great opportunities from being an artist. Though it’s not the smoothest paved road. To be completely transparent, my journey has had its rough stages, but you can’t let it out way your personal achievements.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been tattooing since graduating high school and was fortunate to work around a lot of great artists and different mediums. Would have to say I enjoy designing letters and I like illustration. I really wouldn’t single myself out to one style, I admire a lot of different styles of tattooing, and I’m always willing to adapt and learn. I’m known for line work that’s something I feel confident in. Pertaining to what sets me apart from others is the journey and the things I learn in other fields. I bring it to tattooing. Was able to weldi and fabricate for a few years so Was able to learn a few tricks that oddly work with tattooing. As well as knowing how to draw like to draw on my clients being they all have individual shapes and curves that can help grasp a better feel for their design when in movement. And they get to know what they really want and what will work with their tattoo. I feel like the more time spent in preparing the better you tattoo will be. What also sets me apart is that I work privately in a studio setting. Tattoo shops can get hectic sometimes and having the studio helps with a controlled vibe environment.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Some important lessons I’ve learned is to never give up. Always have fun, and don’t be so hard on one’s self or anyone else for that matter. Work smarter and harder than the day before.
