Life & Work with Tommy Kuir of Orlando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tommy Kuir.

Tommy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For me, music was always an escape. I remember, when i was little, locking myself in the closet (like literally in the closet lol) or in the bathroom and sing Shakira, Britney Spears and Beyonce’s songs. I used to study the way they move, the way they sing, the way they perform and entertain.
Growing up trans is not easy and it can damage your life forever because kids are really cruel, so i grew up with depression and somehow music brought me some joy. That’s why i created Tommy Kuir, that’s my alter ego, that is a latina pop star that little Luisa would’ve love to listen to.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Its not. Transphobia and queerphobia has been a huge problem not only in my personal life but also in my career. But i always have this mentality that i was born to be a pop star no matter what, so all i care is my love ones, my music and my community because i do believe that my career will be bigger than me, and im not saying it in a arrogant way but let me ask you something, have you heard any mainstream trans latina artists? No? EXACTLY!!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional filmmaker and music artist. Im known for my stage persona “Tommy Kuir” i believe that the stage is the safest place for me because i get the chance to be myself and entertain people. Im known for singing and dancing, for bringing a show, i love bringing joy and make a statement about trans love and inclusion. I proud of this upcoming EP that im creating, its about my Colombian culture and my trans culture. Im proud of the details in my performances and most definitely im proud of having the chance to make people dance and smile no matter the race or the gender.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That i love video games! Right know im in the Grand Master range in Marvel Rivals. And also when i was little i used to represent my city playing basketball.
