Life & Work with William Newhouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Newhouse.

Hi William, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been an art kid. Since I can remember I was in somebody’s art class creating new things. For me, food is art. I was never allowed in the kitchen much, but I could sneak my way in by helping with the baking at family events. It began with baking. pies, cakes, brownies, you name it! When I got to college, I had no choice but to cook so I was able to experiment. Fast forward a few years and I was selling plates out of my apartment. During the pandemic, I got bored of cooking and decided to create a sauce & marinade company (Kinfolks Sauce & Marinades). I went through some things and found cooking to be an outlet and found my creative passion again. From there I got to work creating all types of food that can be found on Instagram @Kinfolkspd. And here I am now back into cooking and looking to share my passion and creative energy with everyone!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The very first roadblock I ran into was maintaining a full-time job, a full-time course load, and extra curricular’s while trying to sell plates. I’ve never really imagined having a business or anything at that point so that burnt me out and I left it alone. The next obstacle I experienced was with overseas vendors during covid. Opening a sauce & Marinade business during covid might’ve been one of the hardest things I’ve done. Shipping times, Taxes and Fees on imported goods, etc.… it was definitely a hassle. Luckily by then, I was in my career and out of school so it was less of a load. The last and absolute hardest challenge for me is keeping up with social media. I understand the times we’re in but it’s hard for me to stay up to date with TikTok, reels, etc. I consider myself a creative more than a chef and I get lost in my work. I can spend all day creating things and get locked into what I’m doing and forget to record the process.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Ironically enough, I began working in social media marketing. I think that’s why I’m not big on always being on social media these days. From there I started exploring consulting and landed as a CSM a couple years ago and I’ve been doing that ever since. I love what I do and the company I work for. It’s definitely been a fun ride. I guess the best part about it all is I’m able to use my creative side but I’m just as keen on the flip with my analytical side.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Hmm. I tried to do a little but of everything to be honest. I’ve always been athletic, able to play instruments, and create art. I’ve run track and played football since I could remember. Other than that, I played the snare drum, trombone, and alto sax while in middle school; in high school, I was in the visual arts program as an art minor. I’ve always been indifferent about actual school though. Don’t get me wrong, I have my bachelor’s degree but I think we could be teaching our next generation how to run a business, understand the economy, trades, etc. instead of an end-of-year standard test.
