Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmim Vitoria Mendes Peres.
Hi Yasmim Vitoria , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Many people see me as an average girl who is rich and lives in United States, and I don’t blame them, I would think that too, but my story starts when I moved from Brazil to New York in 2015…I was just a 11 year old girl who had big dreams and big expectations of living in the country of opportunities. At the start it was just me and my mom, it was tough, I had a difficult time at school, I couldn’t make friends, I couldn’t understand anything what people said to me in English. After 1 and half year in New York, we moved to Connecticut, and life was getting a little better there, couldn’t be more grateful, but then my mom decided to move to Orlando, and it was a little tough for me to face the fact of moving again. We came to Orlando when I was in the middle of freshman year, I made many friends that came from my country, I was really happy. I finished High School in 2021, and with everything I went through the pandemic, I improved my painting skills and learned more about photography. With my graduated life, I wanted to make something different…I Started the From Mim To You project, which means I am giving art to all people who is looking for an artistic view. I started taking photos at my church, and the pictures were getting better as time passed by, then I decided to give a try for photoshoot sessions, and it was working really great. I met many interesting people, I’ve learned so many things.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, I’ve had so many struggles throughout my life…but God gave me strength, and here I am making my life in its purpose. When my mom and I came to the United States we weren’t people of wealth, but we didn’t let that take away our happiness and hope. Our home was a small bedroom in a shared apartment, my own bedroom was literally my bed and I was not ashamed of it, we all go through tough things, and it’s okay.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I consider myself a creative or simply an Artist, I do photography, I paint artworks, and I write. I specialize a lot more in paintings and taking photos, at church I am known for both of these things. People sometimes call me “painting girl” or “the photographer gal”. I have my proud moments…I am proud that I can do these things by myself and express my creativity and share it with everyone, but I still have to learn many things. Being set apart of others is because i have my own style of painting, simply drawing and painting “strange” or “random” things.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I have learned that being positive and having faith is always important, God really surprise us in the best ways, I have never imagined that I would be doing what I love and living a good life. When things look down or you just can’t think that you will get through something, just remember that the process of something is always hard but we have to be strong and positive, because positivity and faith is what gets you to the end of the run.
