Today we’d like to introduce you to Zaneta Bailey.
Hi Zaneta, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Zaneta Bailey was born and raised in St.Louis, MO. Zaneta began designing clothes at the age of 10. She became the fashion “IT” girl in highschool when she designed and made her own prom dress in 2001. Zaneta’s prom dress ended up being published in the St.Louis Post Dispatch newspaper.
After this, she became a local celebrity and everyone in the city came to her when they wanted anything custom.
After she graduated from high school she became a celebrity stylist. Zaneta styled for celebs like Trina, Chingy, Trina, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Two Chains and more. Zaneta became the Head Stylist for Chingy. After being a stylist for years she took a break to get her degree and learn the business behind the fashion industry. She realized that her true passion was for fashion Design and she came back to the industry in 2022 to create her heritage brand Zaneta Bailey
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been very bumpy. You have to learn and pay your dues. The fashion industry hasn’t made a space for women of color just yet, so breaking in the fashion industry is costly and has many hurdles. I’m still paving the way for myself and young African American people after me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a fashion designer and master seamstress. I sketch my ideas, create my own patterns, and then construct the garments. I specialize in prom, wedding, birthday, cosplay, or specialty clothing. I’m known for prom and red carpet dresses. I’m most proud of being a celebrity stylist and being a cast member on “Ladies of Orange County” reality show. What sets me apart from others is being a woman of color in the industry, also doing everything by hand sets me apart. I don’t outsource anything. I do the work with my own hands.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Things that matter the most to me are my family first, mental health, building wealth, and making a place for people of color in fashion.
