Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Ifill.
Hi Alicia, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started out doing photography when I was only in fifth grade. I would take photos of my sister and cousins around our childhood home. When my Middle School journey began, I moved to Orlando, FL a city that is full of diversity and art. I feel that is when my journey really began. From there I started taking portraits of students who attend my school. It wasn’t until my eighth-grade year/final year of Middle School that editorial/fashion photography really became my thing. I don’t just do editorial/fashion work as I always feel it to be exhilarating and fun to be able to take a vision/idea that others have and turn that idea into reality.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I feel no one really has a smooth ride when it comes to following their dream. I for one did not have a smooth ride and social media plays a big role in that. With social media, I am constantly comparing my work to others and feeling as I am not the best I can be. No matter the likes or the comments I constantly have the weight on my shoulder. There are also times where people do not respect me and my work at times. I tend to become a doormat with some clients and or be ignored. I feel I am not the only one who has these struggle and I don’t see these things as roadblocks in my journey, just hurdles that I have to leap over.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The work I specialize in is photography, I hope to be known for my editorial/fashion work, but I also do family portraits, graduation photos, weddings, and headshots. They may not be my favorites to document, but I love to make others feel special during their big day/event and am always happy to capture someone’s vision. I feel I am most proud of myself and how much I have grown with my photography. With how big my photography has grown I have made so many new connections and even friends along the way. I feel what sets me apart from others is the vibrance of my photos and the diversity in models. I love being able to capture different people’s beauties that are not usually seen on social media and or on magazines.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’m not sure if me as a photographer has taken much risks in my work. I don’t think there is much in life that is too risky to share or take photos of you just have to believe in yourself and go into whatever you’re doing with your head held high. I also feel that taking risks is something that helps us get out of our comfort zone and is definitely something I want to try with my photography and personal life in 2023.
