Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Bass.
Hi Allison, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been doing nails ever since I can remember. My mom, sister, and I would do our own nails once a week when my sister and I were kids and it’s something we’ve kept doing into adulthood. As teenagers we would practice doing whatever nail art was in trend and our first jobs coincidentally were working in a kid’s spa at the Nickelodeon hotel. We painted a lot of tiny children’s nails and even painted characters like SpongeBob or Dora. I’ve always loved doing nails but it wasn’t necessarily something that could make me successful. Working in a nail salon would only grant me 50% commission at best, and no freedom to do what I think is important in nail care. I think COVID changed the beauty industry, allowing home based beauticians to be successful and give us freedom to specialize in what we’re best at. Now I can take clients as I’d like, with availability that best suits me, and be able to actually care for my client’s nail health- which is not the priority in most nail salons. My mission is to not only provide my clients their ideal nail designs but also to care for their nail health and guide them on a journey to healthy and strong nails. And I am ever so grateful I can do that every day!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with owning any business, there have definitely been challenges. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a wonderful support system in my amazing wife and loyal clients. I’d say building the clientele has been a lot smoother than expected, but I am still working on transitioning to working my business and only that. I do currently work a job that first started as a career. Obviously my career focus has changed, and once the time is right I will be able to exit that position. That has been a particular struggle because you never quite feel ready to make the jump! But I know it will be more than worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a home based nail technician specializing in nail health and nail art. I am most proud of being able to have a client come to me with weak, damaged nails from previous nail salons or nail techs, and guide them on a journey to healthy nails. While adding a little flair of nail art to that. Clients shouldn’t have to choose between healthy nails and fun nail art! It’s hard to find a nail technician that can do both.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was crazy, energetic, and wild. Second child energy through and through! I was always interested in the arts and would’ve much rather been in art class than biology class. I was a creative within my means so if a shirt didn’t fit right I was cutting it and sewing it to fit better. I would either be listening to music, watching the Titanic, or yapping away. I could never stop talking and I’ve taken that with me into adulthood!
