Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Slaughter
Hi Andrea, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been a creative soul and a chronic side-hustle dreamer, but it took years (and a lot of trial and error) to stumble upon my true love: photography. I’m a teacher and in 2019, a class of especially generous students gifted me the funds to buy my first DSLR camera. Cue my awkward entrance into the photography world, where I quickly learned that “point and shoot” wasn’t going to cut it. I didn’t know an aperture from an ardvark.
That spring, I went full-on paparazzi mode, snapping pictures of everything and everyone who didn’t run away fast enough. My early attempts were… let’s call them “enthusiastically experimental.” I shared these masterpieces on social media (bless my kind friends for their encouraging comments). And then, the unimaginable happened—a coworker asked me to take her family photos for money! It was my first paid gig, and I was so excited.
Once I posted her photos, the requests started trickling in. Friends, family, and even acquaintances were asking for sessions. Suddenly, I went from “person with a camera” to being called a “photographer.” I wasn’t entirely sure I deserved the title, but I wanted to earn it.
Then, 2020 hit, and like everyone else, I found myself stuck at home with too much time on my hands. While others were baking bread and binge-watching shows, I deep-dived into photography. I devoured online classes, YouTube tutorials, and blog posts about everything from camera settings to editing techniques. I learned Lightroom, Photoshop, and the fine art of mistake making.
Over time, I developed my own style—a mix of intuition, trial and error, and sheer stubbornness. Thankfully, people seemed to like it! My little business grew entirely through word of mouth and social media. Every photoshoot taught me something new, and each year I’ve felt myself improving.
But here’s the thing: imposter syndrome is real, and I often find myself doubting my abilities. But when I look back at how far I’ve come—from fumbling with my first DSLR to building a business—I can’t help but feel proud. I’m excited to keep growing, learning, and capturing moments that make people smile (and maybe even tear up a little). After all, every photographer starts somewhere, and for me, “somewhere” was cluelessly fiddling with buttons and wondering why my photos were so blurry!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall, I feel incredibly blessed with the journey I’ve had so far. I’ve sometimes wondered if advancements like AI and smartphone cameras might make photographers obsolete, but I truly believe there will always be a need for the creativity and vision a photographer brings. Instead of seeing these technologies as threats, I view them as valuable tools that can enhance my craft and open up new possibilities in photography.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a vibrant, bold, and emotional photographer. My absolute favorite thing is capturing the beautiful, messy, heartwarming moments of individuals and families. I’ve shot everything from business headshots to weddings, but there’s something extra special about working with families—it’s where my passion really shines.
What makes me happiest is knowing I’ve created keepsakes that people will cherish forever—photos that freeze time in the best way. My signature style? Think rich, deep, vibrant colors that practically leap off the screen and bring each image to life. I like to think of it as photography with a little extra soul.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’d be thrilled to help capture your special moments! Whether it’s your family, a milestone, or just because you look fabulous, let’s make some magic together.
