Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Vickery.
Hi Bobby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been an audio person for about as long as I can remember. I’ve been a touring musician, studio producer, and a writer…even won some awards, but audio didn’t always keep the bills paid. Over time, I started to see that the ability to make audio sound really, really good translated to a LOT of other areas than just music. I discovered audio ‘post-production,’ and since then, I’ve expanded the services I provide to include everything my business offers now. I started doing voiceover work, producing ‘jingles,’ and engineering podcasts. Then I started producing podcasts, and now I even coach some podcasts. Anything that involves making something sound better, you can probably just count me in. I love it all.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the biggest issue I’ve had is taking the world of ‘audio’ and figuring out where to have the most focus. As a recording artist, soundtrack composer, producer, engineer, and editor, it’s really tough choosing. In large part, I’ve let the marketplace do that for me. I do have a young family, and some areas, I like to volunteer, so keeping that balance is always on my mind.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I always tell folks that ‘if it has a sound, we can make it sound great.’ I’m an ‘everything’ audio guru. We write here, we record here, we mix here, we master here…and it’s for every kind of media there is. I have scored movies and video games made sound effects, produced albums, done radio jingles, commercials, and theme songs, written, produced, and published podcasts, and more.
I think what sets me apart from most other audio producers is the amount of the project that can be done in one place. I’ve been studying audio production daily for almost 20 years. I can sit down with a recording artist to write, and they can sometimes leave with a mastered, ready-to-publish song at the end of the session. We can do remote work (video conference) from anywhere. The aim of this studio is to start it here and finish it here, whatever ‘it’ is. Every time someone hires another contractor to touch their product it costs additional money, and the risk of losing sight of the overall vision grows. I’m here to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck, but I DO believe in being ready for anything at any time. THAT, to me, is what luck is. If you should have published that content, but you didn’t, you’re not ‘unlucky’ if an opportunity passes you by…you’re unpublished. Nobody can discover you if you’re not discoverable. Quality content produced consistently and published intelligently, combined with the passage of time, produces opportunity. After 20 years of being in content production, I can tell you this is true, always.
