Today we’d like to introduce you to Bonnie DiCocco.
Hi Bonnie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My love for outdoor living started long before I became a contractor. As a child growing up in Orlando, I watched in wonder as my family transformed our backyard into a private oasis. From choosing tile colors to seeing the pool come to life, I was captivated by the entire process—and even more by the way it brought people together. Holidays, birthdays, and everyday gatherings naturally gravitated toward that pool. It wasn’t just water in the ground; it was the heartbeat of family connection, laughter, and memories. Those moments planted the seed for what would become my lifelong passion: helping families create outdoor spaces where life’s best moments happen.
What began as Aqua 4 Pool Design quickly grew beyond pools alone. My creative vision and dedication to building personal relationships with each client led to stunning backyard transformations across Florida and beyond. Through strategic partnerships with realtors, builders, and homeowners, I was able to bring those designs to life on a larger scale—always blending beauty with function, connection, and a touch of luxury.
But as our projects expanded beyond the pool itself—think custom summer kitchens, cozy fire pits, lush landscaping, and sprawling outdoor lounges—I realized I wasn’t just designing pools. I was crafting entire outdoor living experiences.
As the projects evolved, so did the business. A business previously known for beautiful poolscapes became and entire outdoor living brand. We rebranded as Aqua4Outdoor to fully encompass our full range of offerings. We are now a full-service outdoor contracting company dedicated to building luxury backyard retreats where beauty meets comfort, and every corner invites connection.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I first started my design firm, it was just me, a big dream, and a lot of determination. I loved the creative side—working with clients, designing beautiful spaces—but as with any business, I was quickly met with a laundry list of challenges. Finding the right sub-contractors, navigating permitting in multiple municipalities, managing timelines, and wearing about six different hats every day… there were moments when I questioned whether the workload was worth it.
I remember sitting at my kitchen table late at night, designing pools while also answering client emails, coordinating with contractors, and trying to keep up with social media so people could actually find us. It was exhausting, but every time a client sent me a picture of their family enjoying their new backyard, it reminded me why I started this in the first place.
As word spread and projects grew, so did the pressure. Some days the weather wouldn’t cooperate, materials would be delayed, or projects required last-minute changes during construction due to unforseen conditions. There were times when I felt like the dream I had for my business was sprinting ahead of me while I was just trying to keep up.
One of the biggest challenges was assemblong the right team because I couldn’t do it all myself. I had to learn to delegate—to build a team and form partnerships so we could grow without losing the personal touch that made us different. It was challenging, but it was the only way forward.
Through it all, I stayed focused on the heart of our work: creating spaces that brought people together. Every challenge became a lesson in resilience, creativity, and the power of connection.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
For me, outdoor living has always been more than pools, patios, or pretty landscaping. It’s art. It’s about shaping light and water, stone and greenery, comfort and beauty into something that moves people—spaces where memories live, laughter echoes, and families connect.
When I launched Aqua 4 Pool Design, I didn’t just want to build pools. I wanted to craft experiences. My sketches weren’t just plans—they were dreams waiting to be lived in. I approached every project like an artist approaches a blank canvas, layering function with beauty, structure with soul, until the space told a story of its own.
As my work has evolved, so has my creative vision. The firelight dancing on a crisp fall evening, the laughter circling an outdoor dining table, the quiet moments under the stars—this is the art I live to create.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I have 3 things I would say to any aspiring designers:
1. Design With Purpose, Not Just Aesthetic
It’s easy to get caught up in making things look beautiful—but great design always starts with why. Ask yourself: How will people use this space? How will it make them feel? Design isn’t just about lines, colors, or materials; it’s about solving problems and enhancing lives. When your work has purpose, beauty follows naturally.
2. Embrace the Messy Middle
Design is rarely a straight line from concept to completion. There will be revisions, client feedback, creative blocks, and moments when the idea in your head doesn’t quite work on paper. Don’t see this as failure—it’s where the magic happens. The best ideas often come after something doesn’t work, so stay curious, flexible, and open to iteration.
3. Build Relationships, Not Just Projects
In design, your success isn’t only measured by the finished product—it’s measured by the experience you create for your clients and collaborators along the way. Listen deeply, communicate clearly, and bring people into the process. A client who feels heard and involved will always love the final design more because they see themselves in it.
