Meet Brendon O’connor of The Community Barbershop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendon O’connor

Hi Brendon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
. My journey into barbering began when I was expecting my first son. Becoming a father was a turning point for me—it made me want to establish a stable career and pursue something I was truly passionate about.

Before stepping into the barber industry, I worked in hospitality at a restaurant in Celebration, Florida. I started as a food runner and worked my way up to serving and bartending. That experience taught me the importance of customer service, hospitality, and connecting with people from all walks of life—skills that have carried over into my career as a barber.

Barbering has helped me grow both personally and professionally. It has shaped who I am as a person and the kind of man I strive to be. What I love most about this profession is the ability to impact people’s lives—not just by transforming their appearance, but by boosting their confidence and brightening their day. There’s something special about seeing someone walk out of the shop feeling better than when they walked in.

Beyond haircuts, being a barber has given me a platform to give back to the community. Through initiatives like back-to-school drives, toy drives for Christmas, and Thanksgiving meal distributions, I’m able to use my craft to make a real difference. That’s why my shop is called The Community Barbershop—it’s a place where everyone is welcome. Whether you’re Black, White, Hispanic, Gay, Trans, young, old, a single parent, or part of a family, if you’ve got hair, we’re here for you. We take pride in serving all hair types and creating an inclusive space where everyone feels at home.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. Like any career, barbering comes with its challenges. In the beginning, building a solid clientele was tough. There were days when I’d be sitting in the shop with no appointments, just waiting for someone to walk in. It took patience, consistency, and a lot of hustle to get to where I am now.

Another challenge was transitioning from a steady paycheck in hospitality to the unpredictable income of a barber. In this industry, your earnings depend on your work ethic, your skill, and how well you market yourself. Learning how to manage finances, stay disciplined, and keep pushing forward, even when things were slow, was a major adjustment.

Beyond the business side, I’ve faced personal struggles too—balancing work, fatherhood, and the responsibility of growing a brand. But every challenge has shaped me into the barber and person I am today. I’ve learned that resilience, dedication, and a genuine love for the craft are what keep you moving forward. And now, looking back, I’m grateful for every obstacle because it made the success that much more meaningful.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Community Barbershop . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is The Community Barbershop, and the name says it all—it’s more than just a place to get a haircut; it’s a space where everyone is welcome and feels at home. We specialize in all hair types and styles, making sure every client, no matter their background, gets a top-tier experience. Whether it’s a classic fade, a sharp lineup, or a full transformation, we take pride in delivering quality cuts with attention to detail.

What sets us apart is our commitment to hospitality and community engagement. My background in hospitality taught me the importance of customer service, and I bring that same energy to the shop. It’s not just about the haircut—it’s about the experience. We focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere where clients can relax, have a conversation, and leave feeling better than when they walked in.

Beyond barbering, I’m proud of the impact we’ve made through community outreach. We host back-to-school events, toy drives, and Thanksgiving meal giveaways because I believe a barbershop should be a pillar of the community. It’s about giving back, supporting people, and using this platform to uplift others.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the reputation we’ve built—not just for great haircuts, but for inclusivity and genuine care for our clients. Whether you’re a longtime customer or walking in for the first time, we want you to feel like family. That’s what The Community Barbershop is all about.

Let me know if you’d like any changes or additions!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is making a positive impact—both in my craft and in my community. Barbering is more than just cutting hair; it’s about building relationships, boosting confidence, and creating a space where people feel valued and welcomed. Seeing a client walk out of the shop feeling better about themselves is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

Beyond the chair, giving back is just as important. Whether it’s providing free haircuts for kids going back to school, organizing toy drives for families during the holidays, or helping those in need, I believe in using my platform to uplift others. My goal is to make The Community Barbershop a place that truly serves the community in every way possible.

At the end of the day, it’s about leaving a legacy—not just as a great barber, but as someone who made a difference. That’s what drives me every day.
