Today we’d like to introduce you to Caila Coleman.
Hi Caila, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I grew up in a single-parent household, and my mom instilled in my brother and I the value of going after our dreams. Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be a Judge. I met a Judge when I was in third grade, and she impressed me so much that I knew I wanted to have a job like hers. I graduated from high school and college with honors. I then went to law school and have been practicing law for about nine years now. It has been a blessing to provide services in family law and criminal defense. Helping others feel empowered is such an honor. I am not a Judge quite yet. It is still a goal…but I know I have more to accomplish personally before I step into that role.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely not been smooth. Being a business owner feels like an act of faith DAILY. Some days it feels like you have it all together and you are winning; other days it feels overwhelming; on all days you keep showing up. My biggest obstacle has been learning how to be my own cheerleader. Being a woman in the legal profession is pretty tough because it is a male-driven career. Black women lawyers only make about 2% of the profession. I have been to Court and mistaken as a Defendant, Assistant, Court Reporter, or anything other than the Attorney. When you are mistaken for anything other than who you are, it can be a blow to your self-esteem. Because of this, I have learned that I have to encourage myself, stay on a healthy mental/physical health routine, and truly call on my support system if I need to vent.
As you know, we’re big fans of Coleman Law, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I started my firm in 2016 after having been offered low salaries from other reputable law firms. I figured I could make more on my own…and I did. Originally, I started out handling solely criminal defense. I had just resigned as a Public Defender, so I knew criminal law would be my bread and butter. Eventually, I studied up on Family Law and essentially taught myself that area of practice because it was intriguing to me. I primarily handle Family Law cases now. I enjoy paternity cases and helping Fathers establish rights.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Grace. I extend so much grace to people, especially after surviving during this pandemic. People are really struggling mentally, have suffered major losses, and have economic pressures out of this world. Being kind is free. Showing empathy is free. I also give myself the same grace I extend to others. I deserve it too. I am not perfect, and thankfully I have clients who understand.
