Meet Charles Armstrong of Inspire Custom Homes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Armstrong.

Hi Charles, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

I didn’t start at the top. My journey in construction began with a broom in my hands—sweeping job sites, watching and learning while others built homes from the ground up. I was hooked. I didn’t just see sawdust and scraps—I saw the bones of something lasting. Something meaningful.

From there, I worked my way through every trade I could get my hands on. I framed walls in the dead of winter. I poured concrete in the summer heat. I hung drywall until my shoulders ached. Every skill I learned was a step closer to mastering my craft—not just building houses, but understanding how they work and why they matter.

Over the years, I realized that what most builders focused on—speed, cost-cutting, mass production—didn’t align with the values I held. I wanted to create homes that were smarter, healthier, and more energy-efficient. Homes that families could be proud of—not just on move-in day, but decades down the line.

So I went back to school, earned my degree in Construction Management, became a LEED Green Associate, and trained as a Life Cycle Assessment Specialist. I knew that if I combined that education with my field experience, I could do something different—something better.
While studying building science, I learned that net-zero energy homes—homes that produce as much energy as they consume—could reduce energy bills by up to 90%. That hit me like a lightning bolt. That knowledge, combined with my boots-on-the-ground experience, became the foundation for Inspire Homes. It wasn’t just about better construction anymore—it was about building smarter, healthier, more sustainable homes that actually put money back into people’s pockets.

That’s when Inspire Homes was born.

Inspire isn’t just a name—it’s a promise. We build high-performance, net-zero energy custom homes that reflect the people living in them and respect the planet they’re built on. Our homes are designed with intention, built with precision, and backed by expert tradesmen and a 10-year insured warranty.

I started this company to raise the bar—for quality, for sustainability, for the families who deserve more than just another house on a lot. And I’m proud to say we’re doing just that—one inspired home at a time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. But I wouldn’t trade the journey for anything.

There were times I barely kept my head above water. I’ve gone weeks without a paycheck to make sure my crew got paid. I’ve lost sleep over projects that went sideways, vendors that didn’t deliver, and clients who didn’t pay what was owed. I’ve faced the pressure of running jobs while raising kids, finishing school, and trying to build something bigger than myself.

One of the hardest seasons was during my senior year in college. I was still running my renovation company—mostly roofing, siding, and energy upgrades in rural areas. But due to clients defaulting on payments—over $35,000 worth of work—my cash flow collapsed. I couldn’t keep up with supplier payments. Filing liens didn’t always make sense—some clients were elderly or disabled, and I just couldn’t bring myself to go after them. It all came to a head : And just like many greats before me like Henry Ford and Walt Disney I had to file personal bankruptcy just to survive.

But that failure didn’t break me. It redirected me. It reminded me why I went back to school in the first place—to build something that lasts. That experience fueled my passion to create a company built on honesty, sustainability, and strength—not just for my family, but for every family we build for.

Every obstacle taught me something. Every setback added a layer of grit. Inspire Homes is what came out on the other side—stronger, wiser, and more focused than ever.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Inspire Custom Homes?
At Inspire Homes, we don’t just build houses—we craft high-performance, net-zero energy custom homes designed for comfort, resilience, and long-term savings. Based in the Midwest with an expanding footprint and roots in Orlando Florida, we specialize in blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge building science.

What sets us apart is our commitment to sustainability without sacrificing style or function. Every Inspire Home is built to perform—tight building envelopes, energy modeling, solar-ready design, and a 10-year insured warranty backed by trusted tradesmen and precision project management.

We’re known for designing homes that are as intelligent as they are beautiful. Whether it’s a modern luxury residence or a modest family home, our builds aim to reduce utility bills by up to 90%, minimize environmental impact, and maximize comfort year-round. That’s not just good design—it’s smart, future-ready living.

But beyond the technical side, what I’m most proud of brand-wise is our values: transparency, integrity, and craftsmanship. We’re building trust just as much as we’re building homes. Our clients don’t just get a contractor—they get a true partner in the process. Someone who listens, solves problems, and delivers exactly what was promised (or better).

We offer full custom home design and construction, pre-designed energy-efficient models, design-build services, and construction consulting. We also provide owner representation, helping clients navigate their projects from concept to completion—even if we’re not the ones swinging the hammer.

For anyone looking to build a home that stands the test of time, Inspire Homes is the builder that builds with purpose. We exist to raise the standard in residential construction—and help people live better, healthier, more sustainable lives.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy?
Honestly, a lot of things—but they all tie back to connection, progress, and purpose.

First and foremost, family. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing my kids happy, laughing, learning, and growing. Knowing they’re safe, supported, and proud of me—that’s what drives everything I do. I come alive when I’m surrounded by loved ones and when I know that what I’m building, both personally and professionally, is creating a better future for them.

I’m also deeply moved when I see humans going out of their way to be kind—whether it’s someone helping a stranger, standing up for the overlooked, or just offering a little grace when it’s needed most. That kind of selflessness reminds me of the goodness still alive in the world. It inspires me to lead with empathy in both my life and my business.

Progress is another source of joy for me. I’m wired to set goals, complete tasks, and move the needle forward—whether it’s crossing off a punch list on a job site or reaching a milestone as a parent, entrepreneur, or student of life. Seeing things come together after hard work? That’s deeply fulfilling.

When I need to recharge, I turn to meditation—it helps me stay grounded and focused. And I’ve got a serious passion for music. I’m a connoisseur of all genres—hip hop, country, jazz, classical, soul, EDM—you name it. Music reminds me there’s rhythm in life, even when things feel out of sync.

And let’s be real—good food makes me happy too. There’s something sacred about sharing a meal, especially with people you love.

But above all, I love seeing the underdog have their moment—because I’ve been that guy. I’ve been overlooked, underestimated, and counted out. So when someone gets their shot, beats the odds, or turns their struggle into strength—that lights me up. That’s what Inspire Homes is about too: helping people dream big, live better, and build something meaningful.
