Meet Colleen Gonzalez of Orlando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Gonzalez.

Hi Colleen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey began as a mom who saw a need and felt compelled to act. In 2009, I learned that my children’s school, and many others could not offer running programs simply because there were no volunteers or funding. I couldn’t accept that lack of resources should determine whether a child has access to healthy movement, confidence-building activities, and supportive adults.

Using my background in organizational behavior and years of experience in human resources, I started building what would eventually become GROW Healthy Kids, officially established as a nonprofit in 2015. What began as a small effort to support school-running programs has grown into a community-centered organization focused on increasing opportunities for physical activity while fostering meaningful, therapeutic relationships between children and trusted adults. In 2025, we impacted 73k+ central FL youth!

At its core, GROW Healthy Kids is about connection. Whether through shoes, recess equipment, run clubs, or partnerships with educators and first responders, we focus on the interaction…the moment when a child feels seen, supported, and encouraged. Those moments can be life‑changing, and they are what continue to drive me forward.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been many challenges along the way. Establishing a nonprofit from the ground up, transitioning operations out of my home, hiring staff, and building systems that allow for sustainable growth all required constant learning and adaptation.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of surrounding myself with people who are talented in their areas of expertise. Every stage of growth required me to step back and lean into collaboration to ensure GROW was built thoughtfully and responsibly for the long term.

Like all nonprofits, funding remains an ongoing challenge. Creating and sustaining donor relationships takes time, trust, and strategy. It requires connecting with people who not only believe in the mission but also want to truly invest in it. Funding isn’t just about dollars … it’s about shared vision and commitment to transforming children’s lives.

Despite the obstacles, each challenge has strengthened the organization and sharpened our focus on impact rather than quick fixes.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
There has been no luck, only hard work, faith, and LOTS of perseverance.

I was raised in a Catholic household where serving others wasn’t optional; it was simply how we lived. That foundation shaped who I am and how I lead. I believe deeply in God’s plan and have trusted that when challenges arise, there is purpose in the work being placed in front of me.

GROW Healthy Kids is proud to not be a giveaway nonprofit. Instead, we intentionally focus on fostering positive, therapeutic interactions, between children and teachers, children and law enforcement officers, children and mentors. These relationships create trust, confidence, and long‑term impact. A pair of shoes or a sports ball is never “just” an item…it’s a bridge to connection and growth.

Everything we’ve built has come through showing up consistently, staying mission‑focused, and believing that when you serve others with intention, transformation follows.
