Meet David Ginsburg

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Ginsburg.

David Ginsburg

Hi David, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Back in 2015, I was wanting a creative outlet and a way to connect with people. My kids were starting or about to start school and have a normal routine. I worked during the day, and my wife worked nights, so my previous outlet of playing Tabletop Roleplaying Games was out of the question, since I needed to be home at night with the kids. After knocking ideas around, I settled on starting a podcast. I mean, how hard could it be, right? I bought a Blue Yeti microphone on Amazon’s Black Friday sale and proceeded to figure out just exactly what I was going to do.

By April of 2016, I had started settling on the idea of an interview style podcast to talk about fandoms – the things that people love. By May, I had the name and started recording episodes. On June 6, 2016, I launched Tales from the Fandom podcast. It’s been going ever since.

Circling back… how hard was podcasting? It’s a lot of work, even for an indie show like mine. However, the relationships made and stories shared are well worth it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s not always a smooth road when doing the podcast. It was rough getting started. Learning how to edit was the first monumental task, followed by learning all about Instagram. Other struggles included trying to constantly get a grasp on where I fit in to certain online communities, my role in what I put out there into the universe with the podcast, and just settling in to where I am now and working at being at peace with my place. For me, it’s been more of a mental struggle and one that crops up from time to time. However, I know the good stories I’m putting out there are worth the struggles – whether it still be editing, computer/tech related, or anything else that may crop up.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known for Tales from the Fandom. It’s an 8 year old podcast where I speak to people who love stuff and want to share their love with me. I release episodes on Monday, where a different guest comes on and talks about what they love. It can be anything! From TV Shows and movies, to comics and roleplaying games, cosplay, the list goes on and on.

I think I’m most proud of the longevity of the podcast. Barring one long break that lasted several months, I’m consistently putting out episodes 11 out of 12 months. We take a break in December.

What sets Tales from the Fandom apart from others? It wouldn’t be here without the guests that come on and share their stories with me. So the guests make the podcast, and I continue to have wonderful people who say yes!

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
As evidenced by the trend now, it seems every celebrity and famous figure has been getting into podcasting. That’s a great thing. I think you’ll continue to see the podcast community grow and evolve, from simple indie podcasts like mine, to those that have a bigger following.

It makes podcasting more known. More accessible. People who want to listen to the big names will learn how to get podcasts, podcast apps, and hopefully will search for more podcasts beyond those big names and perhaps stumble across some great indie podcast creators.

I think you’ll see more work available for audio editors, sound engineering, things like that. Hopefully that field of expertise continues to grow and become more sought after.
