Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Zakia Chang, AP,OMD.
Hi Dr. Chang, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my path in medicine with a strong interest in understanding the root causes of illness, not just treating symptoms. Early on, I was drawn to approaches that considered the whole person, mind, body, and spirit. That curiosity led me to explore Traditional Chinese Medicine, where I saw the power of acupuncture and integrative therapies to truly transform lives.
After earning my doctorate and completing clinical training both in eastern and western Medicine, I founded Acupuncture of Orlando with a clear mission: to help people heal from difficult, often overlooked chronic conditions using a compassionate and evidence-informed approach. I wanted to create a space that felt safe, nurturing, and clinically excellent. A clinic where patients didn’t feel rushed or dismissed, but truly heard.
Over the years, we’ve grown not just in size, but in impact. From helping patients recover from complex pain syndromes to managing autoimmune disorders, fertility challenges, and long COVID symptoms, it’s been incredibly rewarding to see how much healing can happen when the right therapies and support are in place.
It’s not just about acupuncture . It’s about restoring hope, function, and quality of life. That’s what keeps me passionate every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road but every challenge helped shape the mission and values behind Acupuncture of Orlando.
In the early days, one of the biggest hurdles was educating people about what acupuncture really is and how powerful it can be, especially for conditions that haven’t responded to conventional treatment. There was and still is a lot of misinformation and skepticism, so building trust in the community took time, patience, and consistency.
Another challenge was navigating the emotional weight of working with patients who often came to us as a last resort . After months or even years of pain, misdiagnoses, or feeling unheard in other medical settings. That’s a lot for anyone to carry, and I had to learn how to balance compassion with boundaries, so I could give my best without burning out.
Of course, running a practice also means wearing many hats : clinician, business owner, team leader. There were moments where the admin side threatened to pull focus from the heart of the work, which is patient care. But over time, I found the right support and systems to keep the practice aligned with its purpose.
Despite the obstacles, every step of the journey has deepened my commitment to this work and made me even more grateful for the incredible patients and team that surround me now.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Acupuncture of Orlando?
Acupuncture of Orlando is more than just a clinic. It’s a space of healing, listening, and transformation. We specialize in treating complex and chronic conditions that often haven’t responded to traditional Western approaches. That includes everything from autoimmune and neurological issues to pain syndromes, hormonal imbalances, women’s health, and post-viral conditions like long COVID.
What sets us apart is our integrative approach. While our foundation is in acupuncture and East Asian medicine, we also incorporate modern therapies like ATP Resonance BioTherapy™, Red light therapy, and Herbal Medicine. We tailor each treatment plan based on the individual, not just the diagnosis, because healing happens when we treat the person as a whole.
We’re also deeply committed to education. Making sure patients understand their bodies, their symptoms, and the treatment journey. That relationship-building and communication is something our patients tell us they haven’t found elsewhere.
Brand-wise, we’re most proud of the trust we’ve built in the community. Many patients come to us through word of mouth, and we’re honored to be known as a place that offers real results, compassion, and hope. Our brand isn’t flashy. It’s rooted in integrity, clinical excellence, and a heartfelt desire to help people feel like themselves again.
If there’s one thing we’d want readers to know, it’s this: you don’t have to live with chronic pain, fatigue, or uncertainty about your health. There is a path forward, and we’re here to walk it with you.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think what many might call “luck” for me has often looked like moments of deep challenge that pushed me exactly where I needed to go. Growing up, I developed a love for medicine and the human body at an early age. My father was a professional soccer player and, over the years, I witnessed him go through numerous injuries and some health scares. Watching his journey, I became fascinated not only by how the body breaks down, but how it can heal. That curiosity shaped my path long before I even knew what acupuncture or integrative medicine really was.
Looking back, I can say that it was “good luck” to be exposed to that experience so young . It planted a seed of empathy, curiosity, and determination that guides me every day. Of course, there have also been setbacks along the way. Difficult cases, long hours, the challenges of building a practice from the ground up but even those moments shaped me into the practitioner I am today.
So whether it was good or bad luck, I see it all as part of the journey. Each moment has deepened my commitment to helping others find healing when they feel like they’ve run out of options.
