Meet Fred Griffin, Jr. of West Leesburg Community Development Corporation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fred Griffin, Jr..

Hi Fred, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Greetings,

I’m Fred Griffin Jr., a community builder, advocate, and servant leader born and raised in Eustis, Fl. My journey started with a simple belief that where you come from should never limit where you can go.

Growing up, I saw both the strengths and struggles of our communities. I watched families work hard but still face barriers to housing, resources, and opportunity. That fueled my passion for service and sparked a lifelong commitment to make a difference.

I started small volunteering, organizing neighborhood efforts, and advocating for those whose voices often go unheard. Over time, I realized we needed more than programs we needed structure and long-term investment. I now serve as a driving force behind projects that uplift our people, preserve our history, and create a stronger future as the president of West Leesburg Community Development Corporation.

Today, I’m proud to lead initiatives that bring real change—from building attainable homes to building hope. My story isn’t about titles or recognition, it’s about impact. And I remain deeply committed to making sure the next generation has more opportunities than the last.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey of West Leesburg CDC has not been smooth—but it has been meaningful, resilient, and purpose-driven.

As a grassroots organization serving a historically under-resourced community, we’ve faced our share of challenges:

1. Funding & Resources

Securing funding for community development work; especially in smaller, underserved areas like West Leesburg has been one of our biggest hurdles. Grants and public support often favor large-scale urban projects, which meant we had to work harder to prove the value of investing in a smaller community with big heart.

2. Red Tape & Bureaucracy

Navigating zoning laws, permitting processes, and regulatory requirements has often been slow and frustrating. We’ve had to learn how to work within these systems while still pushing for policies that reflect our community’s needs.

3. Perception & Equity

Changing the narrative around West Leesburg from being seen as a neglected area to being recognized as a vibrant, valuable community—has taken time. We’ve had to fight for equity, visibility, and the inclusion of residents in decisions that directly affect them.

4. Balancing Growth Without Displacement

A core challenge has been ensuring that as we develop, we do not displace. We’ve worked intentionally to create affordable housing and keep legacy residents in place, all while welcoming progress and new opportunities.

Despite the obstacles, we’ve never lost sight of our mission.

Every struggle has taught us something valuable. Every delay sharpened our strategy. Every setback deepened our commitment. And every win no matter how small has been a victory for the people we serve.

We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and even more excited about where we’re going.

We’ve been impressed with West Leesburg Community Development Corporation , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
