Meet Isabel James-Potts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel James-Potts.

Hi Isabel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Orlando, FL, and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Almost 10 years ago, I decided to move to Orlando in search of better career opportunities and have since made a career with the Walt Disney Company. I have always been drawn to the arts and anything that would allow me to be creative, from drawing to painting, and eventually, baking. At first, I would bake mostly to satisfy my huge sweet tooth or just bake a batch of brownies from a pre-made mix. But with time, I realized how much I actually enjoyed the process of creating something from scratch and then seeing the pure joy it would bring those who tried it. I continued to practice and step outside my comfort zone in the kitchen, eventually launching The Copper Spoon – Dessert Boutique!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am a 100% self-taught home baker. Baking from home certainly comes with limitations as far as space and resources. As I launched my business, many many times I felt like I had no clue what I was doing and there are still many stressful moments balancing the baking with another full-time job. But I am anything if not very determined, and I continue to put in the hard work and time to continue growing this business.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Copper Spoon creates custom desserts, specializing on quality and flavor that you would normally only find at a specialty shop or patisserie. Very early on, I realized there was no shortage of home bakers selling their goods, particularly during and after the pandemic. But, a lot of the offerings focused on the look and aesthetic. When I thought of what were the most memorable desserts I ever had, what I remember the most was the flavor and quality of what I ate. And that is what sets us apart; from macarons, eclairs, and tarts, to cupcakes and cakes!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Spending so much time at home definitely encouraged me to try new skills and be more daring in the kitchen. You only learn by trying and practicing, and you can’t be afraid of failing. During this time, I also realized how impactful I could be by sharing baked goods and bringing joy to those around me, pushing me towards my eventual goal of launching The Copper Spoon.
