Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarely Jones.
Jarely, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2015, I took a leap of faith to pursue my passion for helping people learn to manage their naturally curly hair. I grew up straightening my hair to get it to look polished, tamed, and well kept. I didn’t know what to do with my natural hair. When I decided to stop blow drying my hair to be straight, I decided to seek out a hairstylist to cut my natural hair so that I can wear it out the curly natural way (the straight hairstyle cut did not sit well when I tried to wear my hair natural). I went to a local salon to get my natural curls tended to and at the end of the session, I was traumatized by how much was cut off. It was here that I knew something wasn’t quite right with the beauty industry. After a few failed haircuts I decided to try and find a curl specialist and could not find one near me. It was so difficult to find a stylist who understood curly hair and wouldn’t mistakenly cut off, in seconds, what takes years to grow. These experiences have motivated me to seek out the knowledge needed to understand the miscommunication between client and stylist and also BE a part of the solution to get better outcomes in the salon. I changed careers from being a caregiver to a hairstylist and I didn’t have much support in my transition. l Coming from a family of medical professionals, I was expected to also go into the medical field. But I knew that the hair artistry I set out to pursue was not only going to set me up for a stable career but also meet a need in the world. I quit my job at the nursing home and jumped into beauty school and specialize in naturally curly hair. On my journey of finding my career path, it struck me: I could be a solution to this problem (and many other curly-hair problems) if I learn and master the art of working with curly hair. And so, I did, and now my passion has birthed a wonderful space called Faith in Curls.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was hard not having a support system as a 19-year-old. I didn’t have the luxury of living with parents and going to college. I tried going to school and working but it was challenging to do both. I decided to just work until I found my passion. When I did it was not an easy transition. With little funds, I struggled to finish beauty school. What kept me going was this unshakable hope I had for my future in this curly hair artistry career. I was convinced this path I chose was going to be a success even if no one around me could “see it”. I knew I had to walk by faith and not by sight and trust that God was going to see me through it all. After having endured heartbreak, a horrific car accident, death in the family, going from place to place, and 10 months of beauty school, I finally finished and it felt like the greatest accomplishment of my life!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Faith in Curls?
