Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Scherr.
Hi Jay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have loved all things business since I can remember. I was interested in understanding why some businesses succeed when others fail. Following college, I had a successful 30-year corporate career where I held a number of sales and operations leadership roles.
In 2017, I decided it was time to start my own coaching and consulting business where I could use my knowledge and experience to help small business owners and entrepreneurs achieve better outcomes and create more freedom by building a solid foundation in their business.
It was risky giving up the security and benefits of a corporate position, however, I believed in myself and my abilities to help others and deliver meaningful results.
I have grown my business by identifying my target market and ideal customer, being in proximity to those I can serve, and exceeding expectations. I focus on areas where I can help make the greatest impact on my clients’ business.
I started a podcast in 2020 called Business Minds Coffee Chat as a way to give back and deliver more value. It’s a conversational style podcast with extraordinary business leaders, thought leaders, world-class entrepreneurs, and others who are changing the world through the work they do.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always going to be bumps in the road. One of my biggest challenges in the early stages was finding clients that were willing to give me an opportunity. For someone who spent so many years in corporate, building a strong network of new contacts was also a challenge. Fortunately, I was able to leverage some of my connections to jump-start the business.
As an example, a good customer from my time in corporate asked me to help them with process improvements in key areas of their business and help to get a new location off the ground. It was a great opportunity and further solidified the decision I made to go off on my own.
As you know, we’re big fans of Jay Scherr Business Consulting. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m a business coach and consultant, advisor, speaker, and mentor. Known as the Better Business Builder, I provide small business owners and entrepreneurs the tools, strategies, coaching and accountability they need to realize their full potential and achieve the results and success they deserve.
I help my clients create a framework that strengthens the foundational components of their business while creating clarity, focus, accountability, discipline, scalability, and predictable results. This enables my clients to close the gap between where they are and where they want to go.
I enjoy working with businesses in different vertical markets, such as finance, retail, IT, construction, and media. It’s an extremely rewarding experience. What brings me joy is building relationships and helping a client get what they want from their business while sharing in their excitement when they begin to gain momentum and achieve their goals. I feel that I’m in my sweet spot and doing what I’m meant to do.
I offer 1 to 1 coaching, as well as group coaching. I also speak on a regular basis to business and networking groups.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
We never do this alone. I’ve been blessed to have so many people who have played a pivotal role in helping me develop personally and professionally. From my parents to my wife, my son, various managers throughout my career, Dale Carnegie, my networking partners, my clients, and the authors of the many books I’ve read that have shaped who I am. I am forever grateful to them all. I would not be where I am today without the help, guidance, and encouragement of others.
