Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Biggins.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Independently Developing A New Way, Inc. was founded out of a deep commitment to ensure individuals with disabilities and their families have access to meaningful support, dignity, and opportunities for independence. The organization began when its founder recognized a consistent gap in services—many individuals were being underserved, misunderstood, or placed into programs that did not honor their unique abilities, goals, or voices.
What started as advocacy and hands-on support for a small number of individuals quickly grew into a mission-driven organization focused on empowering people to live self-directed, fulfilling lives. From the beginning, the core belief was simple but powerful: every individual deserves to be supported in a way that respects who they are and who they want to become.
Through persistence, community trust, and a strong values-based approach, Independently Developing A New Way, Inc. evolved from a grassroots effort into a structured organization providing comprehensive, person-centere
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, the journey has not always been smooth. Like many grassroots organizations, Independently Developing A New Way, Inc. faced early challenges such as limited funding, navigating compliance and regulatory requirements, and building community awareness and trust. There were also obstacles related to capacity—balancing growth while maintaining high-quality, person-centered services.
Each challenge became a learning opportunity. Through perseverance, strong leadership, and community support, the organization adapted, strengthened its systems, and remained committed to its mission. These struggles ultimately shaped Independently Developing A New Way, Inc. into a more resilient, accountable, and impactful organization.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Independently Developing A New Way, Inc. provides person-centered support and training for individuals with disabilities and their families, with a strong focus on independence, self-advocacy, and life skills development. We specialize in individualized support services, caregiver education, workforce readiness training, and community-based learning that meets people where they are.
We are known for our hands-on, compassionate approach and for building programs around the individual—not a one-size-fits-all model. Our services are designed to honor each person’s strengths, goals, and voice while promoting dignity and long-term success.
What we are most proud of is the growth and confidence we see in the individuals we serve and the trust we’ve built within the community. What sets us apart is our lived-experience-driven leadership, strong accountability, and unwavering commitment to empowering individuals to develop their own path toward independence.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What we like best about our city is its strong sense of community and willingness to support local organizations that serve others. There is a genuine spirit of collaboration among residents, businesses, and service providers, which allows organizations like Independently Developing A New Way, Inc. to build meaningful partnerships and create real impact. The diversity of the city also brings unique perspectives, talents, and opportunities that enrich the work we do.
What we like least is that access to resources and services is not always equitable across all neighborhoods. Some individuals and families still face barriers to support, transportation, and awareness of available programs. These gaps reinforce why our work is so important and motivate us to continue advocating for more inclusive, accessible, and community-centered solutions.
