Meet Jennifer MacGregor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer MacGregor.

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been intrigued by capturing things with a camera; even when I was young, I got back to it, after many years away from it, as another creative outlet to graphic design and I never really put the camera back down. I have always photographed most things, including family, couples, newborns, maternity, etc., but what I truly love to capture is simple portraiture in studio.

For me, this means women’s portraits, boudoir/empowerment and beauty & glam portraits. There is no better feeling than showing other women how beautiful they really are. So many come in my studio either from a place of getting over a traumatic past, are on a self-love journey, need a self-confidence boost or simply to capture where they are now in life and I am honored to be able to show them they, no matter the circumstance, are amazing and beautiful. Everyone comes in nervous, but they leave with a whole other demeanor and it’s complete and utter confidence because they realize they just did something that solidifies they ARE worth it and they ARE beautiful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think being a self-employed by and large is never an easy road. There are always struggles of time management when you have a family. Being that I am a one lady show besides my makeup artist, I do everything to include all client interaction, whether that’s email, texts or phone calls, all the shoots, and all the editing and any product ordering. I love it and have learned to make it all work.

The biggest struggle, of course, has been the pandemic but that is not an ordinary situation. I do find it interesting that I am getting more clients coming to me because they realized they need all the self-love and care after the pandemic, and they are ready to just do something for themselves and it’s amazing to see.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a portrait photographer at heart, and I am known for my darker and moodier edits in pretty much whatever I shoot; however, I have learned to bring that into my studio shoots as well. I choose to be a moodier editor because, honestly, I believe those images create more of an emotive response. I want you to FEEL when you see my images. I try to always change up a little something in each session, but I always want some sort of emotion and connection in my images, whether it’s the pose or the look or even location if I’m shooting on location.

What are you most proud of?
I am proud of the feedback I get from clients. When a client cries because they didn’t realize how beautiful they are or how you made them feel, that is what makes me proud and it’s why I love doing this style of photography.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel that my personality is my biggest asset to doing portraits. You have to make your clients comfortable, and they have your full focus at their session. They must trust you as an artist to be able to create images that are going to wow them as well as be what they truly envision for themselves. I am in my forties and have had my own struggles in life, so I understand that it can be hard to be vulnerable with someone new. It’s very important to me to get to know my clients and it’s why I do a pre-consult with my clients so we can get to know each other a little before they step foot in front of my camera. I want to know why they are doing the session, what struggles they have had. I want to answer all their questions and make them as comfortable as possible.
