Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerrid Kalakay.
Jerrid, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Origin Story — Dos Alas Latin Coffee
In the spring of 2020, as the world shifted and communities sought connection in new ways, Dos Alas Latin Coffee LLC was born in Sorrento, Florida. Officially founded on March 12, 2020, the company was the brainchild of two partners — Jerrid P. Kalakay and Deana Mendoza Kalakay — driven by a shared belief that coffee could be more than a drink: it could be a bridge between people, cultures, and conversations that matter.
The Vision Takes Flight
The name Dos Alas — Spanish for “two wings” — became a powerful metaphor for the enterprise. Just as two wings are needed for a bird to soar, the founders envisioned a business that balanced economic value with social value. They didn’t want to choose between building a sustainable business and creating positive change in their community — for them, both wings were essential for flight.
From the beginning, Dos Alas Latin Coffee stood for connection and community. Drawing on Latin coffee traditions — where cafecito is a ritual of morning warmth, friendship, and storytelling — the brand promised more than caffeine: it promised a place where people feel seen, welcomed, and uplifted.
Humble Beginnings — Coffee on Wheels
Rather than start with a formal shop, Dos Alas took a mobile-first approach. With a coffee truck and pop-up presence, they began serving rich Latin-style espresso drinks, café con leche, pastries, and savory bites at local events throughout Central Florida — from farmers markets to community fundraisers, school mornings to weekend gatherings. As word spread, so did loyal customers who came for the warmth of the coffee and stayed for the conversations it sparked.
Mission — Brew One Million Conversations That Matter
Guided by their mission to “brew one million conversations that matter,” Dos Alas Latin Coffee became synonymous with connection — one cup, one smile, and one meaningful exchange at a time. The founders believed that a coffee company could be a social catalyst — grounding community in shared experience and uplifting everyday moments.
They made community engagement part of the business DNA: catering local events, partnering with schools and nonprofits, and showing up where people gather not just to drink coffee, but to connect.
Growing Roots Locally
Despite being a small business, Dos Alas quickly earned enthusiastic reviews from neighbors and visitors alike for its friendly service and delicious drinks. Its Latin-inspired cafecito became a local favorite, earning accolades from community members and even admiration from renowned culinary figures.
Today and Beyond
What started as a mobile coffee presence has since taken deeper roots in the heart of Lake County, continuing to bring the spirit of Latin coffee culture to everyday life. Whether serving coffee on a roadside, at a celebratory event, or a morning meet-up, Dos Alas Latin Coffee remains committed to its founding belief: that coffee is a conversation starter — and every conversation has the power to lift a community
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Wearing all the hats especially in the beginning was difficult. Growing a profitable business in a competitive market place is always challenging.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the biggest lessons we have learned in business is a “no” today is not a definite “no” tomorrow.
