Meet Jesse Lyon of Lyon Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Lyon

Hi Jesse, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started with a call—but not just one. Over and over, I heard from friends and family who were struggling to find good mental health care. Some said they reached out for help and never got a call back. Others described therapy experiences that felt cold, clinical, or rushed. And on the other side, I spoke with fellow counselors—brilliant, compassionate people—who were burning out under toxic management and barely making ends meet. It was clear: the system was broken, and someone needed to do it better. That’s when I realized I couldn’t wait for change—I had to build it myself.

My passion for the mind started in high school. I became convinced that the human mind is the most powerful force we know, and I made a promise to myself to dedicate my life to helping people unlock that power—to overcome trauma, anxiety, depression, and rediscover their strength.

Lyon Counseling was born out of that vision. From day one, we’ve built our practice around two core values: speed and empathy. When you’re hurting, you shouldn’t have to wait weeks just to hear back. We respond quickly, we listen deeply, and we walk with you through the pain. No gimmicks, no judgment—just real people who care and show up when it matters most.

Every step of our growth has been shaped by listening to our clients and our team. That’s how we’ve created a space that feels safe, responsive, and genuinely healing. We don’t claim to have all the answers—but we do promise to walk beside you with compassion, every step of the way.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! It’s been anything but smooth. Since founding Lyon Counseling in 2017, I’ve had to navigate more than a few storms—some personal, some global. From financial crises to system failures, we’ve had to fight hard just to stay afloat at times. In fact, Lyon Counseling nearly collapsed not once, not twice, but three separate times due to broken partnerships and the dysfunction of the Medicaid system. Each time, it forced me to rethink everything and rebuild stronger than before.

One of the biggest turning points came in 2020, when the world shut down. Like so many others, I was staring down the terrifying question: How am I going to take care of my family? The fear was real. But as with any disaster, you either drown in the chaos—or you learn to ride the wave. That year, I leaned hard into innovation and connection. I began creating videos on social media to help people manage their mental health through the isolation and trauma of the pandemic. What started as a creative outlet quickly grew into something much bigger—Lyon Counseling gained a global following, and our message of healing reached over 2 million people around the world.

We also invested heavily in telehealth, embracing technology to make therapy more accessible and more human. Today, even though lockdowns have lifted, that innovation remains a cornerstone of our work. The mom who can’t leave the house because her kids are napping can still get the care she needs. The college student on the other side of the state can still talk to their counselor face-to-face from their dorm room.

So no—it hasn’t been easy. But every obstacle sharpened our vision and strengthened our mission. We’re still here. We’re still growing. And we’re more committed than ever to bringing mental healthcare to the people who need it most.

As you know, we’re big fans of Lyon Counseling. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Lyon Counseling, everything we do is rooted in the belief that mental health care should be accessible, innovative, and deeply human.

We specialize in treating complex trauma and are proud to be the leading practices in Florida offering advanced modalities like hypnotherapy. In fact, I co-founded an internationally recognized training program called Trauma Focused Hypnotherapy, where we teach counselors how to use hypnosis to help clients heal at the deepest levels. This isn’t just theory—it’s real, measurable transformation, and we’re proud to be on the cutting edge of it.

What sets us apart is our relentless commitment to accessibility and community impact. We actively partner with local organizations that serve unhoused individuals, and we set aside a portion of every dollar we earn to provide free therapy for those who need it most. Many of our counselors also offer sliding scale options, with some sessions as low as $30—because no one should be denied healing just because of a price tag.

Lyon Counseling is also deeply connected to the educational community. We’ve formed strong partnerships with schools like the University of Central Florida, Rollins, Stetson, and Palm Beach Atlantic, mentoring and training the next generation of mental health professionals. Helping people is our mission—but shaping the future of this field is part of that mission, too.

Outside the office, I’m also known online through my handle @LyonMentalHealth, where I interpret dreams and nightmares to help people understand the messages from their subconscious mind. That platform has grown into a global audience, with over 2 million followers, and has allowed us to bring hope and healing to people all over the world.

Whether we’re pioneering treatment for dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder), helping families in crisis, serving the unhoused, or offering late-night support via telehealth, our brand is built on empathy, courage, and creative problem-solving.

We don’t shy away from difficult cases. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. And we will never stop showing up for the people who need us. That’s what Lyon Counseling stands for.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
“What makes you happy?” is a funny question. I actually think it’s the wrong one. Happiness is fleeting—it comes and goes like the weather. What I’ve found far more fulfilling is a life rooted in purpose, curiosity, and meaning. That’s the real beauty of being human.

I find that meaning in my work as a counselor. Every day, I get to sit with people and hear what life looks like through their eyes. That kind of deep empathy and curiosity is a gift—not just for my clients, but for me. I’ve learned so much from the people I’ve had the honor to sit with. Their stories have shaped me, humbled me, and helped me grow. And in return, I offer my full attention, a safe space, and a commitment to walking with them through their pain. That exchange—of wisdom, care, and trust—is one of the greatest privileges of my life.

But if you’re asking what brings me the deepest joy? It’s my family. I’ve been married to the love of my life for over ten years, and together we’re raising a two-year-old son who completely changed the way I see the world. Loving them—and being loved by them—has transformed me more than any book, degree, or training ever could. They’re my grounding force, my inspiration, and the reason I keep doing the work I do.

So no, I don’t chase happiness. I chase meaning. And every once in a while, that chase brings moments of joy that are more beautiful than I ever could’ve imagined.
