Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessenia Gonzalez.
Hi Jessenia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been doing art since I was little, my art has been influenced by different pop culture aspects from a young age. I used to watch Pokémon, Yu-Gi-oh, Scooby-Doo! and other different animated shows in cartoon network or Nickelodeon as well other Japanese anime. Different types of video games also influenced my art style and the things that I enjoy the most creating. I would say that my art style has gone through many phases during the years as I learned different techniques on my own and from art school. I really enjoy illustrating in both traditional and in digital, both are unique and fun. I always carry a sketchbook with me or my iPad because you never know when a random thought bubble might become a useful idea for later on. My favorite things to illustrate include fan art such as Pokémon or any anime that I enjoy but I also enjoy doing my own original illustrations that depict fantasy elements such as sea creatures out of their normal environments, elves or paper planes just flying around and fruits because food is always fun to draw. I also enjoy doing simple cute things, spooky artwork like cute ghost or witches and pumpkins. I always like to experiment with my art and just have fun with it. I started my small business about ten years ago back in Puerto Rico and continued on when I moved to Florida. I enjoy doing anime conventions, markets or even small conventions, it’s always fun to meet new people and it makes me happy to see others enjoy my artwork as much as I do. I hope to do what I love for as long as I can and to keep creating the things that I love the most.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been smooth sailing. It took me time and practice to have enough and different types of art to offer when doing conventions and markets and not all events are profitable unfortunately. The struggles are just part of the process but because of them I have learned and grown.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do prints that come from my digital artwork, I do sketches, paintings, ink art, I also make stickers and sticker sheets. Sometimes I do perler bead magnets and charms. I think my favorite thing to do right now is my limited time artwork where I create art that is specific for a season (summer, spring, fall, winter) or for Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas, in addition to limited time items such as shirts or tote bags. I am most proud of how much I have grown not just with my art but with how I present that artwork during events. I usually have a blue display (blue is my favorite color) and my colorful artwork around to try and catch peoples attention. I am mostly known for my saturated colors on my digital artwork and for my love of cute, spooky things.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was when my dad got my brother and I each a gameboy color and we got our first Pokémon game. Listening to the playlist of Pokémon silver brings me back to this happy memories as an adult now.
