Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Young.
Hi Jessica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I first began my photography and freelance journey in college when I took a Film Photography Class. Here I was able to explore the many creative uses for cameras and how I could express myself and how I saw the world with a camera. Over my time in college, I began to hone my skills with video and editing as well as beginning to fall deeper in love with it. After graduating, I began shooting and editing on the side, mostly for volunteer work and slowly grew to where I freelance full time now. Currently, I work mostly with Non-profits assisting in creating content for their marketing, social media and online presence. While I maintain a personal blog on my social media of my favorite pictures.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe I have been blessed that I have not experienced some of the struggles of others. I do have a wonderful family who supports me 100% and I am extremely grateful for them. That being said, I think the biggest struggles I have experienced is when a potential client questioned my abilities and skill level based on my age, gender and in some cases my ethnic background. Having potential clients unwilling to pay while questioning my skill level has been insulting. However, I take each experience as a stepping stone and I have learned how to politely decline opportunities that may simply not feel right. I can only hope to continue to grow and never stop learning.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Some of my favorite projects have been working with a Ministry in Central Florida, Resplendency. Having the ability to film content for community outreaches and content which brings the audience encouragement and hope while being creative has been extremely rewarding. That being said, my baby is my photography blog which showcases the various style points. I enjoy trying this with photography skills. You can see more on my Instagram @Povfilms https://www.instagram.com/povfilms/. Recently I have been working with a Bar Association to help with their online Continued Legal Education. It has been an enjoyable experience to learn more about the legal field as well as film and edit virtual events.
All in all, I really love the various ways I get to be creative, whether personally or with my clients.
