Meet Jocelyn Roman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Roman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always loved taking photos for as long as I remember. My grandfather always had a camera in his hand taking photos and videos of me, so maybe that’s where it all started. When I turned 21, my parents bought me my first semi-professional camera and that changed everything. From that moment on, I was always taking photos and even started charging! I think I charged $20 for my first shoot. It’s crazy to think I went from charging $20 a shoot to where I am now. Photography really is my passion.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh no! Not at all. There have been some discouraging times for sure. In 2017 I made my business a corporation and quit my full-time job to pursue it. That was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I struggled so much that year but learned so much about myself, about business, about money and about what I really wanted to do with the passion that I had. I would say that was my hardest year. But also, I deal with people on a regular basis. All of my clients are amazing. But I’ve also had some run-ins with people who have tried to take advantage of me, which sucks.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a wedding and lifestyle photographer! I started photographing in NYC and now I photograph in Orlando and other parts of central Florida. I love to photograph weddings and people. That’s my specialty! Recently, I’ve been working with Instagram influencers to capture photos for brand deals they have and I’m honestly loving that so much! I’m so proud that I built a business from absolutely nothing. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I’m on my way and I made that happen for myself. Nothing makes me more proud. I feel like there’s a photographer out there for everyone, but for me, photography isn’t just about photos, it’s about people, connection and this beautiful gift that I can give someone. Being able to connect with people is my ultimate purpose and I’m so happy I can do that with my camera.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I still get nervous before every shoot and every wedding. Every time I tell someone that, they are surprised because my shoots are fun and I love to talk to my clients! But yeah, I get nervous still and I doubt myself sometimes but I’m learning to work through that and push myself for the betterment of me and my craft!
