A Journey of Resilience: My 25-Year Mortgage Industry Odyssey
My journey in the mortgage industry began at a time when I was still trying to carve my own identity. At the age of 23, with little college education, I was eager but unsure of my direction. My mother, a steadfast mentor who had spent years successfully navigating her own career in finance, recognized my uncertainty. She sat down with me one evening, her wisdom flowing as freely as her anecdotes from the early days of her own career.
“Success in this industry is about more than just numbers; it’s about relationships,” she told me, imparting the first lesson of many that would guide me. Instilling in me the values of integrity, tenacity, and empathy, she encouraged me to build a solid foundation in understanding not just mortgages, but the people behind them. At first, I was apprehensive to get into the industry (at the time) I wanted to continue my college education and become a wildly success news broadcaster. Clearly life takes twists and turns and it landed me right in the mortgage industry.
As I immersed myself in the industry, my mom’s mentorship was my compass through the complexities of financing, credit analysis, and market trends. I started at a large bank, where I quickly learned the intricacies of loan structures and the importance of customer service. But it wasn’t easy. The constant shift in regulations and economic pressures made the landscape challenging.
Through it all, my mother remained my anchor. Her phone calls, often filled with insights drawn from her experiences, were a lifeline during tough days. “Every challenge is an opportunity to learn,” she reminded me. This mantra transformed my perspective during critical moments in my professional life as well as my personal life, allowing me to see setbacks as stepping stones rather than barriers. This especially became a useful l have mantra when two life changing events have occurred over the last 25 years. One when my second son was diagnosed with autism in 2009 and again a year ago when my husband brutally took his life in front of me upon sparing me of my own life. In life it is not what happens to us that define us, it is how we handle it.
As I gained confidence during my professional journey, I seized every opportunity to expand my knowledge. I diligently pursued certifications, attended seminars, and connected with industry professionals. My mother’s belief in my potential pushed me to seek roles that aligned with my evolving interests. When I expressed interest in becoming a loan officer, she encouraged me to take the leap.
In my second role, I excelled at cultivating relationships with clients. Each borrower became more than just a transaction; they were stories waiting to be told, dreams to be realized. Guided by my mother’s principles of empathy and understanding, I prioritized communication and transparency. As a result, my referral base grew, leading me to surpass my sales goals year after year.
My first year in the industry, I was honored to be the “Rookie of the Year” and shortly thereafter, I had become a recognized name within my organization. My persistence and dedication paid off, and I was promoted to a managerial position. Here, I faced a new set of challenges: mentoring a team and fostering a culture of collaboration. I often leaned on the lessons my mother had shared about empathetic leadership.
Drawing from her experience, I implemented training programs that emphasized not only the technical aspects of loans but also the importance of customer relationships. My mother’s teachings became the backbone of my leadership philosophy, culminating in a team that thrived on camaraderie and mutual respect.
Fast forward to now, the culmination of 25 years in the mortgage industry has been nothing short of rewarding.
As I continue my journey in the mortgage industry and through lifes trials, tribulations, setbacks and successes, I am profoundly grateful for my mother’s mentorship. Through love, lessons, and unwavering support, she has not only influenced my career trajectory but also instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to give back. My story is not just about my successes; it is about carrying forward a legacy of empowerment—empowering others as I was empowered, one mortgage at a time and one life lesson that must be learned.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Market flutuations such as interest rates and market conditions.
Regulatory compliance with every changing laws and guidelines, on going education and dligent adherence to industry standards which can all be tie consuming and complex
Managing Client expectations in a competitive market while balancing the need for speed and efficiency while maintaining thoroughness
Economic downturns or changing in housing demand due to uncertainty of job security for clients which results in my team losing income.
Lots of competition and on line companies which results in loss of client/loan officer relations
These challenges are some of the many that we face as mortgage professionals. In addition, the mortgage industry can be a “male dominate” industry and to be a successful woman loan officer, we must stand out in the crowd by having strong product/program skill set as well as the ability to adapt and overcome all obstacles
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
When my son was diagnosed with Autism in 2009 and I was told by a neurologist that he would never walk or talk and that only 10% of autistic adults can function in society, I looked right at him and I said, “Well, my son will be one of the 10% and for the last 17 years of his life, I have made sure that those words that resonated from my lips would be carried through”. With willpower, dedication and determination, we can overcome anything. He not only walks, talks, runs and has a part time job, he is also a wonderful person and friend to all that have the pleasure of knowing and loving him. I thought at that time, that was the WORST thing that could ever “happen” to me. Now, it has become on my greatest life lessons. It has taught me patience, empathy and a will to succeed. Fast forward, one year ago, almost to the day, my second husband of 11 years, took his own life in front of me upon sparing me of my own. This was the second biggest challenge that I have faced in life. I am in the process of writing a book about mental illness and what happens behind closed doors that often times no one knows about. These two life experiences have forever changes who I am. They have given me a strength to be reckoned with and a willingness to give back for the rest of my days in my professional and personal life
