Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Young
Hi Julia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up in Taiwan, I was surrounded by vibrant flavors, bold spices, and the comforting warmth of home-cooked meals. Food was more than sustenance; it was a language of love and connection. By the age of six, I was already helping in the kitchen, captivated by the transformative magic of cooking. I loved helping my mom and grandma in the kitchen. Taiwan was where my passion for food began, but it wasn’t until my early teens, when my family moved to South Korea, that I discovered my love for spicy food.
Living in South Korea, I was introduced to an entirely new level of heat and boldness in cuisine. It was there that I fell in love with spicy flavors and started experimenting with incorporating chilies into my Taiwanese culinary roots. This transformative experience sparked a lifelong obsession with spice—a passion that would later shape my entrepreneurial journey.
After high school, I joined the U.S. Air Force and served for four years. This chapter of my life instilled discipline, resilience, and a drive to push boundaries. Living in and traveling to different places and meeting people from all walks of life broadened my horizons and planted the seeds for a future I couldn’t yet envision.
When my time in the Air Force ended, I transitioned into the corporate world, where I spent nearly two decades climbing the ladder. While my career provided stability, I often felt a yearning for something more—a way to combine my love for food with my desire to create something meaningful. Over the years, I continued experimenting in the kitchen, perfecting recipes that brought the fiery, complex flavors of my childhood and South Korean influence to life. My love for traveling and exploring different cultures also shaped my culinary journey, exposing me to diverse ingredients, techniques, and traditions that I’ve woven into my creations.
It wasn’t until I reflected on my journey—the lessons learned in Taiwan, the spicy inspiration from South Korea, the discipline from my military service, the business acumen I gained in the corporate world, and the love and support from my friends and amazing husband—that I realized I had the foundation to start my own business. My love for spicy food and the dissatisfaction I felt with bland chili oils available in the market inspired me to take a leap of faith. I began experimenting with recipes in early 2023, determined to create a chili crisp that captured the bold, vibrant flavors I loved. After months of refining and perfecting, I launched my Asian Inspired hot sauce business, More-ish Sauce Co in the Fall of 2023, ready to share my creations with the world.
Becoming a business owner has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding journeys of my life. Starting from scratch meant long days and sleepless nights, juggling everything from recipe development to packaging design and marketing. I had to teach myself the ins and outs of running a business—sourcing quality ingredients, navigating production logistics, and building an online presence. There were moments of doubt and countless obstacles, from tight budgets to learning how to connect with customers. Despite the hardships, I poured my heart into every aspect of my brand, determined to create something meaningful. Although it’s gratifying to see my products resonate with others, the journey has been a humbling reminder that success requires relentless effort, adaptability, an unwavering belief in your vision, and having a great support system through friends and family.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to becoming an entrepreneur has been filled with struggles and steep learning curves. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the ins and outs of running a business, often without any prior experience or guidance. From sourcing ingredients to handling production and logistics, I had to wear many hats and do most things myself, which was both exhausting and overwhelming. The most difficult aspect, however, has been marketing—especially mastering social media. It’s an area I’m still learning and growing my knowledge in, as building an online presence and connecting with potential customers requires constant adaptation and creativity. Despite the hurdles, I kept pushing forward, knowing that every effort brought me closer to sharing my passion with the world. It hasn’t been easy, but every lesson learned has made me stronger and more determined to succeed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My business specializes in bold, flavorful chili crisps and Asian-inspired hot sauces that elevate everyday meals. We’re known for creating products that deliver an exceptional balance of heat, umami, and complexity, catering to foodies, home cooks, and spice enthusiasts alike. What I’m most proud of is our commitment to quality—every product is made with natural ingredients, no preservatives, and handcrafted in small batches to ensure the freshest and most vibrant flavors. What truly sets us apart from other hot sauce companies is our dedication to authenticity and innovation. We blend the bold heat of chilies with unique, culturally inspired flavor profiles, offering something that’s not just spicy, but truly unforgettable.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
To new entrepreneurs starting their journey, my biggest advice is to embrace the challenges and stay committed to your vision. Building a business is not easy—it requires resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. One thing I wish I knew when I just started is the importance of having a strong support system. Surrounding yourself with encouraging family, friends, or mentors can make a world of difference during tough times. It would be even harder to do this without my husband’s unremitting encouragement. Equally important is having tenacity because there will be days when the obstacles feel insurmountable, and you’ll want to give up. Stay focused, celebrate small wins, and remember why you started. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with persistence and belief in yourself, it’s absolutely achievable… which is still something I need to remind myself of daily.
