Meet Karldez Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karldez Powell.

Hi Karldez, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My mother, Nakei Powell, bought me a Polaroid camera for Christmas when I was a kid and I was as interested as children mostly are. Love it one day, in a pile of stuff the next. My brother and I created a silly film about aliens invading earth and I must say we were some pretty good actors back then. After moving from North Carolina to Florida, I began to get really involved in my church’s media team. I started to learn more about camera’s and it peaked my interest in photography and videography even more. While attending high school, I expressed interest in taking a photography class elective and my father, Karl Powell, purchased a Canon point and shoot camera. The more I developed an understanding of camera’s and techniques from school and church, the more curious I became. At church, I began working with one specific camera every Sunday and it gave me motivation to purchase my very own and eventually start my own business now known as Jami Films. It is a company based in Orlando, Florida that specializes in telling stories through videography and photography. I have been and will continue to constantly grow my business and my skills.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I guess I would have to say no, it has not been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t expect it to be. It has been a challenge to find my own style, build a business and a client base. I picture my life doing what I love and I’m not easily moved by struggles. I constantly access my growth and continue to move forward as I know struggles only help me to become a better videographer and photographer.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Mainly what I specialize in is video. I like taking photos as well, but my future goal is to become a film director. I create films, such as documentaries, music videos, behind the scenes and weddings. I’m known for my eye to capture moments and my profound editing skills. The work I am most proud of is a film I created with a celebrity artist that was aired on BET. I believe what sets me apart is my drive and motivation to be better than I was the day before. I’m constantly learning and improving my craft everyday. I never stop learning because I know that I can always do better. I know that I am extremely creative and innovative and the only way I can establish my own lane is by being better than my yesterday.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I believe it’s great to always network. Whenever I’m working, I like to be social and genuinely get to know the people I’m around. I think in this day in age, you can learn everything from YouTube or you can go out and learn for yourself. It’s not imperative to find a mentor in your field. You just need the drive and discipline to learn your craft. What has worked well for me is learning from YouTube and actually going out and shooting videos and photos. I learn best hands on. I do have a mentor, but he mostly mentors me about life and spirituality.
