Meet Kat Ferguson of Kat Ferguson Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Ferguson.

Hi Kat, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved being behind the camera. Never had the thought of making a career out of it though. It was always just for fun. I think what made me dive into it a little more was when I had my daughter, Mila. I was completely obsessed with capturing literally every milestone and all of the special moments of my little family. I just became extremely passionate about photography. It only felt right for me to turn something that I loved so much into a business and share my creativity with the world!

I, of course, wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my amazing and supportive husband. Who always believed in me, pushed me and helped me with every single step into making something out of this.

When it came to building a portfolio, I honestly just have the greatest group of friends that without hesitation, would model for me to help turn my visions into reality for the world to see.

Fast forward to today, I am so grateful to have grown so much in just over a year! From couples, individual portraits, and families to expanding my photography with engagements, small weddings and elopements!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely not a smooth road. I think what was frightening for me at first was taking the leap to actually quit my job at the time to pursue my photography full time and making a business out of it. I basically started from scratch. I worried if I even made the right decision or if I was even cut out for this. I was in the stage of a lot of self-doubt and thinking about if I would even make it. Trying to get bookings and build a clientele was tough because there’s already like a million photographers out there that obviously had more experience than me. It took a lot of time and patience to get to where I am today though. I think for everyone, starting your own business will always be rough in the beginning. Just make sure that you push through, stay dedicated and pursue your dreams aggressively.

I am very self-critical and there are times that I feel my work isn’t my best. At times I get very discouraged and end up losing motivation but then I remember my why. Why I am doing this and why I love doing this. I am still learning so much along the way and strive to improve my craft every single day.

There are still some challenges and struggles that I encounter but what is life without the obstacles, right?

We’ve been impressed with Kat Ferguson Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
With Kat Ferguson Photography, I offer a variety of sessions, styles and I am also completely open to create some magic with whatever ideas a client wants to bring to life. While I’m known for couples, individual portraits and families, I am slowly growing my business with elopements and weddings.

I am very specific when it comes to my editing style. I put so much heart into my work and it’s just an amazing feeling to know that it’s truly loved and admired by others.

I aim to bring out raw emotions from each individual to create the most natural and genuine feels in their photos that they are able to hold on to forever. With every session, I make it a priority to connect with clients on all levels and build a relationship with them. To not only be their photographer but also a friend that they can trust to capture all the special moments in their lives.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I would say being ambitious and creative. I’m really determined to succeed in all parts of my business and my goal is to always create beautiful, unique and inspiring images. It’s also extremely important for me to stay authentic to myself and all of my clients.
