Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Broski.
Hi Kelsey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My start was anything but normal, but I am strange and unusual. I have been making art my whole life. It’s what sets my soul ablaze but finding work can be hard sometimes. I needed to find a part-time job while I focused on my art career. That’s when I officially started working in the tattoo industry. I wasn’t tattooing or learning anything quite yet, but back in 2019, I was a counter girl for Atomic Tattoos at the Florida Mall.
I wasn’t into becoming a tattoo artist at all, quite frankly, I was terrified of the thought of giving anyone a tattoo. I’m a huge empath and the thought of hurting people scared me from ever thinking of becoming a tattoo artist. Working for Atomic Tattoos changed that for me. They showed me how wonderful tattooing can be and that’s when the ball started rolling. I left Atomic Tattoos as their counter girl and began working.
During COVID-19, I spent my time building up my art portfolio and after that, I begged everyone I could to take me on as an apprentice. Gosh, I bet I was so annoying. I worked hard; I didn’t stop fighting for my dreams. After one failed apprenticeship that was no cause of my own in 2021, I finally got my true official start in January of 2022 with Realm Tattoos in Orlando FL. I was mentored by the owner and artist of Realm Tattoos the famous Jonathan Betancourt. I can’t express my gratitude to him and his team for seeing my potential and that fire that’s always been inside me. They always pushed me to be the best artist I could be. I completed my apprenticeship In June 2022.
During my apprenticeship, I learned so much about myself and the dreams I had for my future as a tattoo artist, all while learning the industry inside and out. My true dream was to create a business that was my own and to become the first in my family to have a successful small business. My birthday is the day after Halloween so I have always been obsessed with the holiday. I grew up on Long Island in New York and I have such fond memories of how magical fall felt each year and I wanted to recreate that feeling.
Trick or Treat Tattoos was created with the essence of magic and the hard work of wanting to be successful, safe, and practical. I want to give my guests the feeling that they have stepped into another world where the veil is thin and ghosts, paranormal and magic exist. I want to not only give them a beautiful tattoo, but I also want to give them an experience. I want my guests to come as strangers and leave feeling like they are now a part of my little spooky family and our traditions all year round.
Thus, on February 2/22/23 the candle in our jack o’lantern was lit and Trick or Treat Tattoos was forged from the darkness! The Spirits of the old Irish Jack o Lantern tale have taken my private studio past the veil onto the other side right here in Winter Park, FL. I work with them as the Head Witch/Tattoo artist creating ornate and spooky designs for all types of trick-or-treaters. This is where Halloween is every day. I can’t wait to see you on the other side soon!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If life was always smooth sails, would we have truly enjoyed the journey? To answer your question there were bumps in the road for sure, but that is always to be expected when you’re starting in a new career.
I find that challenges bring so many new opportunities for learning and growth. With that, it only makes Trick or Treats Tattoos stronger and gives our clients the best experience they deserve.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have always been a traditional artist apart from being a tattoo artist and I am so proud of that. I went to college for my fine arts degree in 2012 and completed it in June 2015, without receiving my art degree. Not only have I produced pieces for customers, but I have also taught art classes too and made a name for myself in the art community. I am a master of acrylic, watercolor, and oil painting as well as pencil and charcoal drawing.
I have spent my time dedicating myself to honing in on my craft as well as learning and working with Fortune 500 companies such as Walt Disney World. I have spent my 20s not only learning how to cater to customers but also learning what it takes to run a business.
I feel that my drive, creative flair, and storytelling as well as learning how to create a safe and magical experience for my clients is what sets me apart from the rest. My style is black and grey work with an emphasis on anything illustrative, but I am a sucker for color and have a wicked knowledge of color theory.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
One of my favorite childhood memories was this one Halloween when I went through my first haunted house at a local farm out east on long island, if you know, you know that there were some scary houses out there in the 90s.
My dad lost me in the haunted house… But I think it was I that lost him because I didn’t want to leave. I caused a scene but I thought the haunted house was just so cool. I guess I was house-hunting for the future!
