Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Ulysse .
Hi Kendra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the small town of Melbourne in Central Florida. Raised by both of my parents and grew up in the church. I’ve always been surrounded by music and staring singing at 2 years old and performing at the age of 5. I’ve been writing and composing for the last 3 years. I’ve been pushing myself as an artist for 2 years. It took a lot of courage and being different to start my sound and break out in the industry. I believe with hard work and dedication; anything is achievable.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s not been easy, mainly as a mother of two and employed full-time. It’s not easy finding the time and spending money for promoting and studio sessions. I also had a hard time working with men. I’ve had many major artists and labels try to work with me, only for them not to have any motive of bettering my career but for their gain. Keep telling myself I won’t compromise my morals to get ahead. I believe what is for you is for you and doesn’t require losing everything in the process.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an R&B artist first. But I’m breaking out as a rapper, known for my social media presence. My growing audience likes my down-to-earth personality and how I interact with them. I’m most proud of not being afraid to be my person. I believe what sets me apart from others is I’m unapologetic and authentic. All my music is original and personal and tells stories of things I’ve encountered in life—love, heartbreak, experiences in the streets, and learning to hustle.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
I haven’t taken any significant risk. But I will be soon; I am putting a lot of money into a few projects. And in my rap group, I’m a part called Florida Girls. That another local artist and I created. Most successful people take risks. Taking risks shows you believe in something and do not fear failure. Something will stick eventually.
