Meet Kevaughn Browne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevaughn Browne.

Hi Kevaughn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started shooting photos as hobby around 2017/2018 a little after my father passed away. I needed something to keep my mind busy and cope with the loss. Fortunately, my brother and one of my best friends were already into photography. This encouraged me to pick up the camera and start shooting. I remember when I first started, I bought a broken camera that I had to tether to my phone in order to get shots. I also shot with a broken manual lens. This was a true character builder because my cousin would always criticize me saying, you need to focus better on the eyes! However, it was so difficult because I was working with so many broken moving parts! I am grateful for this because as photography transitioned from a hobby to something I do professionally, focus became my most valuable tool to telling the story of the portraits I would capture.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Photography has not been a smooth road at all; however, it has been a bumpy road of growth. Once I quit my job as a full-time teacher, there was period of time where I did not have as many clients. As a consequence, I had to find different ways to make money to survive. Outside of some financial issues, I can go through seasons in which I lack inspiration or motivation. I call these creative walls/blocks. When this happens, I think it is important to slow down and shoot what inspires you most for fun.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I shoot a little bit of everything; however, I specialize in headshots. I am super proud of the process of headshots, knowing how which lenses are the best to use to flatter a person, knowing how lighting can help shape one’s face and the power of focus. A person’s eyes are the window into their soul. Our eyes can help tell our story and help people understand who we are and what we’ve been through. As a photographer, I like to think we are a community that can learn from one another and grow together, so what makes me different from another photographer might help them grow in an area in which they may not have. Likewise, I have a lot I could learn from someone else who shoots differently than I do.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For people looking to get into photography. NEVER give up. Keep going. Understand that you never stop growing or learning!
