Today we’d like to introduce you to Kira Colon.
Kira, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got into Human Resources 13 years ago, because it was the perfect combination of people and processes – I could help employees navigate the processes within an organization to take care of them and the business. About 5 years ago, our small family-owned business services firm expanded so I could join and bring HR+Payroll services to the small businesses community.
Working in large organizations provides the opportunity to learn and start my HR career, but nothing has compared to small business consulting. I learn just as much as I teach, as I walk alongside small business owners. It is fulfilling to know I have potentially provided business-protecting compliance information, so that a business owner knows the risks and benefits to their employer-related decisions. We are a team in my mind, and I want small businesses to grow and thrive as they become employers!
And as a working mother, I am able to bring out awareness and change to the employers I consult for on a daily basis. The perspective not only helps me to support other women business owners, but also has presented opportunities to share a new viewpoint to business owner on how to take care of their employees.
Being in a small business, and being on-call for my clients, also lets me show my kids (especially my daughter) that you can work hard but also be there for your family. Our business strives to be an example of one that supports the growth of women as a business owner and family care provider.
I love where my career path has taken me. I have a mission to build compliant, streamlined, and technology forward HR+Payroll departments for small businesses, and I am blessed to serve and fulfill this mission daily!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Coming into a small business, I have learned the struggles of defining your service and marketing it to other small businesses. I am thankful that I have found several wonderful community and professional groups that have helped me grow and network, so that I can reach the goal of serving small businesses as employers in the community.

I originally went to college with the intention of going into the medical field, so I have some medical related knowledge that has served me well in my HR career when working with employers in the medical field.
