Meet Lindsey Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Wilson.

Hi Lindsey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Orlando, mostly in the Dr. Phillips area but lived all over Orange County throughout my youth. I started school at (now closed) Woody’s Hair School while renting a tiny bungalow one block from Pulse. My husband found a great opportunity for work in Ft Lauderdale so we moved south. I finished my schooling in Boca and started looking for a salon to train. The majority of my training and salon experience was apprenticing under incredibly talented mentors with staggeringly high standards. My training wasn’t about just hair and a good finished product. It was about the experience of the salon itself and the pampering and comfort of our clients. That training has served me well as a fully functioning stylist.

My family and I moved to the Space Coast from Ft Lauderdale in 2014. When I started my search for a new workplace, I found that my area was missing what I was looking for. I knew I was going to have to build what I wanted out of a workplace.

Cocoa Village was where I knew I wanted to build my dream. It is quaint and charming. With the down-home feel of a small town yet a busier city on the rise. I delivered my second child July of 2019 and opened the Lucille Jane Salon just three months later.

The name of the business is to honor Jane Lucille Wilson, my husband’s late grandmother. When she passed, she gave us the ability to more easily start a business. She was an incredible woman with a fascinating life. She would tell us she was, “Just plain Jane.” The woman was anything but. One of our services we offer is a pedicure called the Plain Jane. It’s our most luxurious option. It is 1 1/2 hours long and includes collagen eye masks, neck wraps, and all the pampering. Just like her, it’s anything but plain.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I delivered my second child in July of 2019 and opened the salon in October of 2019. What can I say, I thrive in chaos. I had a group of friends and family that are incredibly reliable and helpful. Without them, I would still be building out a salon. I’d say the biggest struggle of the start of my business is that I wasn’t able to physically able to do the job at hand. I was unable to lift anything heavy, hindered mobility from being 7, 8 & 9 months pregnant, and everyone urging me to go sit down. They were right and I did. I would find jobs I could do safely and rely on my hardworking and patient husband to do the rest. Once Charlie arrived, I took my three weeks to recover from the caesarean surgery and then went right back to work. Cory, my husband, set up a safe and secluded area where we had the nursery and I would work between feedings and naps. We started excelling and the steady progress of upward momentum once opened for business. Then Covid 19 hit. While we prepared financially for a rough first year of a new business, the shutdown was not ideal. I tried to view it as a gift for me to spend some maternity leave time I missed when my son was firstborn. I enjoyed every second of the time with my family. We survived the shutdown and were fortunate that we did.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have progressed to love color correction and Balayage highlighting. This has become my specialty over the years. When I started my career, I almost exclusively did styling, such as bridal hair and photoshoots. While I still love the styling aspect of hair, I have come to love the challenge of a color correction. It can take hours and sometimes months to get hair to the ultimate goal. The feeling you get when you accomplish your goal and your client has tears of joy in her eyes. It is tremendously rewarding. I think what sets me apart is the time I take with my clients. I don’t double book so that my attention is exclusively on the person in my chair. I want to be able to focus of making sure my client leaves having accomplished their hair dreams. I also have many new talented stylist that sometimes need my help with a complicated job. I like to be available to help and run my business day-to-day needs.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I love a risk unless I’m gambling. Penny slots, not a black jack kind of gal. In every other aspect of life, I go forth with boldness and somewhat unwarranted confidence. My personality is a daring spirit and have always been apt to leap first. Since my children joined the fold, I have been more cautious of my decisions, especially financial, as they no longer affect just me. But that “go forth and figure out the details later” urge still lives within. Risk is a necessity. It’s the varying levels of repercussions of what that risk could cause that makes me hesitate.
