Today we’d like to introduce you to Mekenzy McCormick.
Hi Mekenzy, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Since I was young, I’ve always had a passion for crafting and witnessing the joy my projects bring to others’ lives and homes. I started with a sticker machine – a hobby I would tinker with after school, and it came in handy for personal use, but I never thought it would go any further. As I learned more and got better equipment, family and friends would have to make custom shirts and stickers frequently. Life happened; I had my son and pushed my crafting hobby to the back burner while turning on full mom mode. I soon started decorating my son’s nursery and browsed many sites searching for custom items for my baby. I finally thought, “Why not just buy a laser machine and start making my own while making money at the same time?” About the time my son was born, so was Treetop Timber Co. We’ve only been operating for a year this month and have a lot of learning and growing to do, but in that short amount of time, I’ve witnessed an outpour of small town support and that alone makes the small business hustle all worth it!
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a long road, but it has been smooth for me. Of course, I’m working out some bugs, such as getting a fully functioning website to help manage orders and shipping and taking the proper precautions to ensure I get the longevity I need from my laser machine. My family also moved mid-year, so starting over in a new home, building a new workshop, and trying to operate through the move was challenging, but we made it!
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in a wide variety of custom wood products. When I say wide variety, I mean comprehensive charcuterie boards, name signs, porch signs, keychains, and cake toppers. I could go on for days, but you get the point! I’m most known for my children’s bedroom name signs. I also enjoy creating them the most. Nursery signs have become increasingly popular, and I often have customers reach out with a specific room theme in mind, allowing me the creative freedom to design a board to match. Seeing a room tie together with adding one of my custom-made pieces brings me so much joy.
How do you think about luck?
“Hard work puts you where good luck can find you.” I live life and lead my small business with this mindset. I’ve been dealt some blessed cards, but hard work is what has truly gotten me here.
