Meet Myleka Barnett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myleka Barnett.

Hi Myleka, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been surrounded by photography my entire life. My grandmother always had a canon camera and they were nothing compared to the cameras we have today! I grew up in the 90s and digital cameras came out in the late 90s but didn’t become accessible and affordable until the early 2000s. My grandmother is actually the first person I’ve ever seen with a dslr camera. She loved to take photos of me and my cousins, and she always had multiple copies printed to distribute amongst the family. As a child, I’ve had hundreds of disposable cameras and if you’ve ever had one of those things, you know that you have absolutely no clue how these photos are going to turn out until you took them to the pharmacy and got them printed! Photography was always a hobby for me but something so close to my heart. I’ve been doing photography since I graduated high school. I purchased my first camera with some of my graduation money.

So technically, I’ve been doing photography since 2007. As the years went on it developed into my passion. My main focus with photography was always nature, I love sunsets, I love the sunrise, I love the moon, flowers, the ocean, etc. Sunsets just make my entire day and everyone who knows me well knows that about it me. Which is how I got the name Photos by Sunset INC. It started out with me capturing moments of my two children. Then I started taking candids of family members and friends, and everyone always enjoys those “in the moment” photos that it just genuinely makes me happy. Earlier this year, I decided I was going to take my photography to the next level and make it a profession. I feel like ever since then, I’ve been blessed with opportunities. I am originally from Queens, NY. I just recently made this move in August and this is probably one of the best decisions I’ve made. While I feel it would’ve been easier to start my profession in New York because I know so many other creatives, Models, and photographers, I am up for the challenge of building my business literally from scratch! I’m here for the growth, and I’m learning new things every day!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building a business is never easy and some people may have more advantages than others. I would say my biggest struggle is not really knowing anyone in Florida. But I’m putting myself out there and meeting new people so it won’t be much of a struggle for long!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a lifestyle, nature, and child photographer! I am known for my sunset photos, when I first started photography that’s all I did. I took photos of the sky, the clouds, sunrises, sunsets, the moon. But sunsets have always been my favorite. Once I had children, they became my main photo focus.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Don’t go out and buy a bunch of equipment and lighting! I’ve definitely wasted some money on things I didn’t necessarily need.
