Meet NC Hagood of New Smyrna Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to NC Hagood

Hi NC, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Brooklyn and developed a deep love for art by watching my older brother paint, sketch, and live the artist’s life. From there, my passion for art blossomed. Over time, I learned that art became a companion during both hard and good times. I use my life experiences, alongside my dreams, to create powerful, ethereal pieces.

I’m drawn to abstraction and experimentation. My work often conveys emotion and dreamlike narratives, which I draw from my personal history. Through my art, I tell stories about people, places, and events that I believe subtly and meaningfully connect all of humanity.

I’ve served on various art organization boards and curated many exhibitions. I enjoy promoting both my own work and that of others.

Currently, I find myself in a place where I am learning to embrace my own humanity. Letting go of youth and its glory is not always easy. I recently completed a piece titled Mirror, which reflects the idea of accepting ourselves as we age. How do we embrace aging—do we go with it or do we cover it up? I believe this is a source of empowerment and self-love, especially for women who struggle with accepting their appearance as they grow older. In Mirror, I gave the woman different-colored hair, layered her in clothes to cover up, and left much to be pondered: is it right or wrong to hide ourselves as we age?

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a rough road but glorious. I married young had 3 children. Always had to work from week to week until I finally got some breaks. Landing some decent jobs. My art had to take a back seat during this time. I could only paint late into the night.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been doing open studios for a long time. The energy you acquire from others is wonderful. I have been fortunate to have a group of like minded artists. We are not traditional but believe in creativity rather than just technique. Since I have been on many boards it affords me a chance to promote in a very enthusiastic way.

What matters most to you?
My family is the most important thing in my life. Many of my muses have derived from them or some memory of some experience that I remember.
