Meet Patrick Feeney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Feeney.

Hi Patrick, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Welcome into our Petals & Feathers apothecary and stay a spell. I’m Patrick, the sorcerer of the shop. My aromatic journey and plant passion began with exploring the powers of fragrances and the ancient practice of aromatherapy. Medicinal plants have a long history of therapeutic use, and I discovered a treasure trove of benefits for wellness remedies, beauty treatments, and a healthy home. Whether you’re looking for a healing balm for sore muscles, a relaxing spa retreat, or a spiritual scent for mediation, you’ll find the perfect gift for any occasion here.

Petals & Feathers was established in the Fall of 2019. Using intention-backed ingredients, I started learning how to make scented designer candles, curated herb blends, and fragrant flower potpourri. I launched with my line of small-batch Herbal Alchemy Candles at the Witches’ Ball Orlando. After a successful grand opening, I entered a farmer’s market in St. Cloud and sold my seasonal collections in Sanford and downtown Orlando’s Bazaar Botanica, featuring independent artisans.

In 2020, I expanded my offerings and started cleaning up in the COVID-19 fight. Using Mother Nature’s “Petal Power,” I offered carefully blended combinations of essential oils for botanical hand-sanitizing spray, plus non-toxic self-care provisions, including mineral salt soaks, bubbling bath tonics, coconut sugar scrubs, luxury sculpted soaps, and solid lotion bars with skin-loving oils. Your choice of scent and color is handmade to order.

My business partner, Michael, is a pro gardener, photographer, and fiber artist. He makes exclusive collections for our shop, including his handwoven macrame ornaments, wall hangings, and air plant holders made from 100% upcycled cotton. Our family cooperative is earth-friendly and crafted with pride in our workshop at Lake Nona. Our goal is to support the Orlando community and uplift friends of the fringe: the happy, wild, and free Spirits. We would love to collaborate with other local artists and small shop owners to help spread the wealth, bring joy, and inspire creativity.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The last two years have been difficult for everyone due to the social problems caused by COVID-19. Suddenly, pandemic restrictions kept people at home. I made greater use of my free time by doing something creative and rediscovered old hobbies. At times of transition, I can look back on the year – or the month, or even each day – and share the struggles and successes when life changes. It has been extremely challenging. Yet our business clients, family, and friends found new ways to connect and build back stronger.

I had mental breakdowns then breakthroughs in 2020. But after the Plague comes the Renaissance. I reclaimed my shine, and a star was reborn. Post-pandemic 2022 is looking brighter. I emerged from the pit of despair through a cognitive-behavioral practice of keeping a journal. What I learned: To cultivate an attitude of gratitude and to reflect and be mindful of a Rose, Thorn, and Bud you have experienced. Rose = A highlight, success, small win, or something positive that happened that day. Thorn = A challenge or something that needs more support. Bud = New ideas that have blossomed.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most proud of growing my creative business and making lasting impressions both in-person and virtual spaces. In October 2019, I first shared my wax art and homemade recipes on social media. By June 2020, I celebrated my 100th post on Instagram. Our audience rewarded us 1,000 likes throughout our first full year in business. My portfolio now represents 400+ pieces of original work over the past three years. I found candle and soap making was something I loved. As a hobby, it was a great way to focus my creativity and connect with other LGBTQ artists and makers, helping to encourage each other’s entrepreneurial journey.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I have always had a creative drive. What I liked most in school and the Cub Scouts organization to which I belonged was making Art. Yes, Art is essential for all children’s development. My parents, school teachers, and guidance counselors have always promoted the creative spark in me. I have dabbled in various artistic mediums of expression, including drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture, graphic design, and moviemaking.
